/v/lancer: A mod for bros by bros
-
Not crediting the original authors is the same as claiming them as your own. It’s only common courtesy to at least mention it…
A mod is still work made by people. It still required time and effort. The fact that the platform is an existing game does not change that in any way. On top of that, the discussion is centered on models and textures which are, on their own, works of art just like digital art is, because they are digital art.

Well that’s like, your opinion, man.

I still do not see how this is different from any of the things I listed in my previous post. I must, however, applaud your maturity in handling this thread. Most people would have banned anyone who tried anything remotely like this.
-
Actually, if it’s giving credit you want, we’ve told the /v/lancers various times who made what in the mod, and the readme does already give appropriate credit, and will stay this way, except for Crossfire.
-
But may I ask why you haven’t contacted the original authors before releasing the trailer? Since you’ve actually taken the work directly from the mod, you should know who to contact, no? It would’ve taken 5 minutes and would have resulted in a lot less of drama… I think we can all agree that less drama is good?
-
Not at all.
-
@ FriendlyFire
We’re 4chan remember? /b/ or not we 4channers love drama.
As for contacting, we would use it regardless of whether or not they said yes. -
You don’t think it’s important to respect the original author? You know, most people would’ve been happy to let you use them. Instead of antagonizing people, you might’ve gained some new players, you could’ve gotten help from others. Now, I’m not so sure…
-
You misunderstand the purpose of posting here. As Hurtbutt said
/v/lancer was made for /v/ and nobody else.
The point of this was rather to announce ourselves on our own terms, rather than have a Lancer stumble upon us by accident, excuse the hostility, but we neither want, nor encourage non-bros outside of /v/lancer to join, if we advertise for new members, it’s on /v/ and /v/ alone.
-
I think we’ll have to agree to disagree on this then, because I still won’t condone what you’re doing, no matter who’s going to play it or why or how. I hope you can understand the divergence and leave it at that. As you’ve said, there’s nothing we can do to stop you and it would be foolish to think otherwise.
I’m afraid this also means you won’t get much help or friendliness over here, one way or another.
-
Glad we can reach an understanding then

Man… this raises my hackles…
After spending the better part of this year nailing down permissions & making new friends along the way for my mod… this makes me sick to my 3rd stomach…
FF is right… most devs & teams are quite generous when approached the “right” way… man i even dragged out some old Lancers and asked them too… (Firebase… Buck Danny… ect…)
What in the world makes you guys so very special that you don’t have to follow what is the most basic of modding ethos?
Go back to your self contained little world… & bother US no more.
END of my 2 cents…

this makes me sick to my 3rd stomach.

Trying to stay out of this but feel drawn to that statement. So by saying that, how is that different from theft?
That is no different than taking someones car without permission, still theft. Personally, if you guys do the decent thing and give proper credit to items used from other mods then this will all blow over. If you don’t then fine, you know where the door is.

Threads like these are exactly why I never visit any section of 4Chan.
Since I realize that it’s useless to argue with you “bros”, I will simply say that use of someone else’s content without permission is extremely disrespectful. It does not matter where the content came from; the point folks are trying to make here is that when you sink hundreds of hours into creating something, you should be entitled to maintain some sort of ownership about it without someone else stealing it and using it. To make an example that you might be able to actually understand, it’s like writing a long poetic letter to the woman of your dreams - only to have some jackass steal it and give it to her instead. How would you not be a little irritated? (and don’t give me the “lawl why would you put hundreds of hours into a love letter?” crap)

This is a humorously gray area that is getting tackled here. I’d prefer to stay out of it, and considering the audience, and who is making this, I am willing to just let it all slide. In fact, if you aren’t already, you all are welcome to use my effects if you want.
Also sauce on the first videos music? I know I’ve heard it somewhere before, but I can’t put my finger on it…

You guys are funny, so clearly you went through all the proper channels and got authorization before you used other peoples music, other peoples ideas like Star Wars, Babylon 5, X3 etc etc, right? If not you’re kinda being hypocritical here my friends.
-
These mods did not use content directly; only creative ideas (such as the Babylon 5 universe etc.). While that is admittedly a bit of a grey area on its own, it is an entirely different story than stealing physical media like models, textures, etc. Plus, these mods at least credit their sources of inspiration.
Edit: Apparently, credit is supposedly given (except for Crossfire - you guys should credit that, regardless of rather you like it or not - you clearly liked it enough to use stuff from it). Still, you should ask before you use things.
-
Sure is good reading comprehension in here.
As I’ve said, I do give credit to the modders, I do however, ask permission.
