Don’t get your hopes up for it being released anytime in the near future.
The CF community seems to worship the mod-maker and thus give him a huge ego. The following is the original post and my response, posted here for posterity, since I doubt he’ll keep the post there afterwards.
The issue people had was that there was a timer ‘counting down’ till the release of CF v1.9 but the mod-maker didn’t say a single word until much later, long after the countdown had expired without any new downloads available.
The issue I had was with the attitude that he had in his post, the most offending line of which I have highlighted below in BOLD font.
@SWAT_OP-R8R:
1. I have never promised a release at a preset day… never…
my words clearly have been “IF everything runs well…”
2. there are official development threads where clearly is stated that prior the release several beta tests are going to be done
have you seen such tests yet? no?
so why in gods name do you think i would release the mod today
3. also on the dev boards are requests towards the community about stuff that i need done prior the release
when that is done ill do the release… not before
4. the countdown on the main CF site reflects the day that I wanted the mod to be finished on my end… and that btw. was clearly said here on the forum.
Guess what… i am one week behind the time… because I have stopped working on the mod one week ago due to the reasons described in the previous posts.
I am not getting paid for my work nor am I somebodies slave. I decide what I do and when I do it. That means in this case i am god.
The countdown on the forum was meant to be for a first internal release of the mod… so the devs can check it once more and the still missing intro video can be produced… prior the beta test is done. But NEVER i have said that the mod will be released today.
5. when will be the release?
I DONT KNOW!
I DONT KNOW HOW LONG THE PPL WILL NEED TO CREATE THAT INTRO.
I DONT KNOW HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE FOR HAEGAR AND HUOR TO FINISH THE CFHOOK.
I DONT KNOW IF ANY PROBLEMS APPEAR DURING THE BETA TESTS WHICH I NEED TO FIX AFTERWARDS.
you want a forecast? -> x-mas 2013
so i repeat it again… actually the mod is 1 week from being done but i will not release it
And now for my response to his post that I posted there. Undoubtedly will be deleted but meh, not like I give a damn. I use a different username there since it was an old account that I hadn’t logged into in years (due to his attitude). I’ve put bold around the most important points in my mini-rant below (and yeah, that’s just a mini-rant for me, haha).
@DarkWraith007:
I’ve decided to post here, regardless of being ‘banned’ (not like I give a #$%%) for what I might say.
It seems even in the past few years, the ‘SWAT-OP’ hasn’t been able to balance that big-ass ego of his. Claiming you’re ‘god’…really now? And you wonder why people on Lancer Reactor and The Starport didn’t want #$%% #$%% to do with you anymore.
You’re entitled to do whatever the #$%% you want ‘SWAT-OP’, but putting a countdown timer till release was a dick move if you never planned on following through. You realize that, everyone here pretty much realizes it but are either too cowardly or too stupid to speak up and say something for fear of being banned. But whatever.
Regardless of your personal character faults, you make good #$%% mods and people here were hoping for the next evolution in the FL community. A really well-done SP campaign, completely new, that continued where the original vanilla campaign left off. You even still have it up on the portal, all the promises and screenshots and stuff.
Here’s a very simple example of what you could’ve done but refused to do, because you’d rather be an egotistical asshole than show any pittance of respect towards the fans who’ve waited months/years for this release.
@Example:
Replace the zero’d out counter with a link to a forum announcement containing the following
Hello everyone, SWAT-OP here. You may be wondering where Crossfire v1.9 is and why the countdown was posted when it hasn’t been released. During development, many things happen to cause unexpected delays. I messed up, and I’m man enough to realize that because something should’ve been posted about this sooner rather than letting that stupid timer countdown and keeping everyone waiting. It was a dick move and I hope you all can forgive me for that.
Regardless, #$%% happens. Due to unforseen circumstances, Crossfire v1.9 is hereby delayed/postponed until further notice. It WILL be released, just not now or in the near future. Its done when its done. Again the timer was more of an estimate but I realize I should’ve gotten rid of it and posted this much sooner when I realized it wouldn’t make the date.
Thanks to all who’ve waited and please rest assured the delays will result in a wonderfully-awesome and QUALITY product that will blow every other mod outta #$%% space!
This matter isn’t up for further debate, but I could use some more feedback and beta-testers who won’t just want to play the mod but will want to actually HELP me by doing frequent and detailed bug reports to get this #$%% DONE.
That’s a post that’s both humble, apologetic, and explains the circumstances without insulting your audience/fans.
YOU ARE NEVER anyone’s ‘slave’, you dick! What part of ‘completely voluntary’ don’t you understand!?
You can quit anytime you damn well please, and don’t be so #$%% arrogant to think you’re doing anyone a huge ass favor and that their life depends on you releasing a mod for a game that was released back around the ‘new millenium’.
Simple fact is the single player campaign would use copyrighted characters (Trent/Juni) and content that you don’t own (the Freelancer IP). This is a fan project, not for profit, that’s how #$%% goes. Tons of fan projects get shut down either in the early stages, shortly before release, or right after release. Be damn #$%% lucky there is still a community and that M$ and Digital Anvil don’t give a #$%% enough to shut down these mods (that are technically all in violation of the EULA and possibly the DMCA but w/e). If you want to see the work of people who make modding Freelancer look like a child’s toy, check out ‘Crimson Echoes’ on YouTube. Ever given a shot at ASM rom hacking for the SNES and other 16-bit systems? You know, REAL programming that requires REAL knowledge, rather than editing a bunch of files and calling it a day? Its fairly easy to say that Freelancer modding isn’t so complex as to be anywhere near as hard as that type of programming work that they did. Especially reverse-engineering the compression algorithms just to fit everything within a limited cartridge size (else people couldn’t play it via flash cart on a real SNES).
I didn’t mean to be this pissed off at first, but someone has to tell it to your #$%% face…#$%%.
I’ve taken the liberty of reposting this in other areas (alongside a copypasta of your original post there) since I’m well aware I’ll be banned and have this post deleted after everyone’s already had a laugh at your expense.
I don’t give a #$%% that you didn’t release, but I do give a #$%% about your attitude that we’re slavedrivers or some #$%% like that. Go work in game development with a company like EA or ActiBlizz and see just what ‘slavedrivers’ really act like, even if you’re getting paid for #$%% they’ll show you just how much easier it was to do work on your own.
Enjoy.
If the mods want to stick this in the ‘graveyard’ area, they’re welcome to do so if they feel this doesn’t belong here. However I would like people to be able to at least read about what’s going on over on the CrossFire forums so they know its best to avoid that online community and what to expect from the admins/mods there even if they decide to play online at their own peril. Take the worst a$$holes in any online FPS and stick them all together in the same forum, and there ya go.
