It is not a must that nothing new be added, but it is much preferred. It is just that when I look at other vanilla-esk mods, I see that they have added quite a lot of new ships, equipment and occasionally even changed some aspects of gameplay. In my view, Freelancer can be balanced without doing these things. There are already plenty of ships in the stock version. The reason most of them go unused is because there is no balance among them.
I played on a pure vanilla server a long time ago, and most people flew eagles. There were a few people who flew other ships, but they were a definite minority. It just made me sad that no one could really fly anything else without majorly handicapping themselves.
I feel that the different ship classes should be balanced out with and within each other. Any ship should be able to take down any other, they just would require different playstyles. Of course, once the ships and their classes are balanced out, then the equipment would have to get the same treatment. Then any individual could use any ship they like with any equiment it can equip, and have an equal shot at taking down others.
I would like for this to be compatible with the storyline (single player) as well. Since I believe that would make things much more enjoyable. Once you get to the point where you find a ship you like, you do not have to change ships just so that you can survive later on.
And to HunterKiller: I will take a look at Big Daddy’s mod to see if it is what I am looking for, thanks.
