Microsoft cancels Flight Simulator franchise
-
The latest Microsoft shock news, is that they have cancelled all work on the ever popular Flight Simulator series and fired all its staff from the Aces studio that was developing the next version.
Sources close to Microsoft are hinting at a future for the franchise in an MMO type format where pilots would pay for a selected part of the world to fly in via a subscription.
When Microsoft were approached by some of the big third party addon companies for the source code so they could develop it further, they were given the proverbial finger.
Sound familiar?

Funny this comes soon after them closing Ensemble Studios. It really makes me believe they want to completely drop PC gaming and concentrate on their “nice” Xbox…
Bunch of wankers

I think this bodes well for Freelancer – as Game Stop no longer sells PC games and the slow death of PC gaming continues – People will be coming back to the older Games – alot of people have had bad experiences in online gamming – I personally own 2 dead machines ( im lazy and mean to get around to fixing them ) One my son got virused on deliberately and the other my daughter picked up something – so here we are a safe happy adult little comunity with a great game – This could also make us the last refuge for all the flight sim junkies out there

Man… ???
Granted, it has been a few years since I’ve played the Flight Simulator franchise, but it was always fun. You can add my name to the list of sticking to older games - it’s already my philosophy anyway. Last time I think I bought a new PC game was when ‘The Orange Box’ came out! Haven’t plans to get anything new either, given what is out there right now.

The thing i can’t understand is that FS makes them a load of money, it’s one of the few programs that people didn’t mind had the M$ name next to it, so why fire over 5000 people? It’s a franchise that’s been going for over 27 years. They are truly insane in my book.
I found it quite handy when i was thinking about taking my PPL (private pilots licence) as it was excellent practice out of the plane, saved me hours of training. If M$ think for a minute ppl will sign up for a pay to play version of FS, they are sorely mistaken

I’m sure the community will be in uproar about this decision. A odd decision to take away a proven money maker - at least over in Ireland it usually went for twice the regular retail price for a PC game. Guess it’s time for the FS community to join the FL community in taking the last released base and continually build upon it to keep her going.
