StarForce is removed when you patch to 2.x versions of the game. In fact, if you install the game with a fresh install and immediately patch, you’ll never have to install StarForce at all (it only installs if you run the game unpatched) - newer retail versions of the game come pre-patched to 2.x versions as well.
Edit:
@HazardFN:I would go as far as to say it IS Freelancer with shinier graphics and no multiplayer…
Personally, I like X3 for being able to raise up a fleet and ultimately become a real powerhouse against the other races if you so desire. However, it should be noted that combat and AI both fall flat on its face, and don’t hold a candle to even stock Freelancer, much less Flak (shameless plug XD hit) - the combat would actually be decent if the AI was any good, but the lack of good AI kills a singleplayer-only game.
Edit 2: I think my above statement was actually a little unfair to X3. Yes, the combat itself is kinda shallow, however X3 is more about fleet strategy, which is what makes it a nice change of pace versus Freelancer. When you think about it, the combat is really all about quickly making a plan about how to engage a group of hostiles, appropriately dividing up targets amongst both yourself and your wingmen, and then executing that plan. In that sense, it’s a little more deliberately paced than Freelancer, which is again both good and bad - it totally depends on what you’re in the mood for, honestly. I’d recommend playing both.

Didn’t know X3 before patch 2.0 had star force, thanks for the warning. Anyway thanks for the input. Heres what I’m looking ordering;
Freelancer
Darkstar one
X2/X3 from steam no starforceAlso looking into Evochron Legends, Dark Horizon, Starlancer, and Freespace 1/2 . Any Input on these before I order will be great, thanks again and sorry the thread went sort of offtopic.

FS 2 isn’t that bad IMHO. However, if you have FS2, there is no need for FS1 since there is a FS1-campaign created by fans.

Well from my humble beginnings, my thoughts are as follows…
The Single Player freelancer game is absolutely fab. But it took me 3 weeks to get through it. I got a big kick when I completed it though.
When I ventured into Multi player, I got shot to pieces without warnings by idiots time and time again. I started hating it, I changed servers so many times, and even when I went to the most populated ones, I still got harassed and killed by idiots - but more of them.
Then I found some server (forgot its name, it’s over 4 years ago now) where within moments I got blasted by a character with an [RRJDS] prefix - but this time he had warned me, then stayed with me, asked if I was OK. When I bitched a bit he told me he would put it right, and he did - paid me some cash for the stuff I had lost, then took me on a trade route he had worked out that started making me some good cash. And I discovered that all players on that server were of like mind, warning before blasting and giving time for me to reply, and if I didn’t want to be blasted they would team up with me and help me get around.
So I joined them.
Now we have our own server, so come and take a look at our website: www.rrjds.com
And take a look at our forum - www.rrjds.com/forum
If you like what you see, don’t worry about the Single Player game - just download the mod (it already contains the Global List Server patch) and come and join us, talk to any player and you will get friends and help and companionship.
This is what Freelancer is all about to most of us.

I’ll be sure to check out your server, anyway I’m ordering tomorrow and picking up Darkstar one, X2/X3, and Freelancer of course. I mite grab dark horizon and Evochron anyway thanks for the input.

Oh just wondering are there any populated MP vanilla servers out there? or any real stand out servers?

I believe 24/7 FREELANCER UNIVERSE is pretty much vanilla - they have an optional mod, though in truth I haven’t visited there in a LONG time, things may have changed.
