Ship skinning help req
-
Hi. Well basicaly I’m gunna have a shot at making a clan skin for our ship the Stingray. I have milkshape and cs, is this all I need? And in regards to the texturing, do I need to get hold of the basic frame of the ship to apply them to during modeling? Any help is much apreciated, thanks in advance ;D

In milkshape you need to make a new material, and then load the texture (tga or dds… preferably dds) into it. Then assign it to the ship group that you want to have this particular texture. Once you do this select the faces of the group you want to texture. Then go to your texture coordinate editor (its in one of the top pulldown menus in milkshape). From there you can remap the UVs and tweak them accordingly to remove the texture stretching and apply the appropriate parts of the texture to the model.
I know this isn’t very indepth, but texturing is such a difficult subject to explain using words. I would reccomend that you download some texturing video tutorials, it really dont matter which program, b/c in theory its essentially the same thing… tweaking the UVs to minimize texture warping while getting the look you want.

I have recently just learned to use the ship cloner and it saves alot of trouble with the textures
I will say I have seen just enough to get an idea of how much of a pain texturing can be
still trying to find a decent tutorial myself
once I come across one, I’ll be sure to post either a copy of it or a link to it here
I now know how to clone ships but, making custom ones I’m not so sure about
I think I’ll want to clone several more to get a better idea of how that works before trying custom stuffbtw, good luck with that ship
