GFX cards…. what to choose and what not.

ATM i have a set of 2 8800GTX cards (those double slot things) in SLI mode.
Now its generaly known that SLI isn’t all that good. Costs lots of money and the performance is only good when applications support it, even with all driver tweaks from NVIDIA…
Now im looking for a new GFX card, a single card no SLI this time.
I allways liked NVIDIA as most games supported this and now im looking at the GTX 285 Geforce. But, what experienced are there with ATI? They run nice in benchmarks, but most of the time they can’t keep up with NVIDIA with games and such, atleast that was my experience with those cards.
Would it be good to swap my SLI for a single GFX card? … or should i stick with SLI and buy 2 of those (rather expensive) GTX 285 or worse 295 cards?

I’ve read often that the 4870 X2 is a killer graphics card, but I believe the GTX 295 has taken back the single-card crown.
Looking at a few benchmarks, the 295 is indeed the best single GPU you can buy right now. However, check the prices: it’s very possible AMD will cut the prices on the 4870 X2 to compete with the 295.
I also read the 295 has a good headroom for overclocking. I suggest you also check out partner 295s, as they often offer overclocked or supercharged cards. Check this BFG 295, for example, which nearly has 2gb of VRAM (!).
