Here is what we’ve come up with for the history of the mod. I don’t claim to know everything about Freelancer, so some of the things in here may not make sense to some of you. This is simply a draft, so if you have a suggestion or comment, or if something doesn’t fit, this is quite open to discussion.
Before reading the following, I suggest reading both the nomad faction overview and the Liberty overview. Both of those were written by Chris Todd at 7crows.com.

Leeds has a massive planet-wide strike due to the horrible treatment and living conditions of employees. The average life span of a worker on Leeds is a mere 25 years, and the people are quite angry.
-
This effectively slows the industrial sector of Bretonia quite a bit. Seeing as Liberty and Bretonia have always been close, President Walker, the new leader of Liberty after the end of President Jacobi’s term, resolved to encourage sales of products, more specifically those not being produced due to the strike, in Bretonia.
-
The Corsairs and the Outcasts are fighting ever more ferociously, and the systems in between the two often change sides when one advances or retreats further. The two are fairly evenly matched, and so the battles continue regardless of temporary victories or losses.
-
Hostilities between Rhineland and Kusari flare up when the ownership of a new and unexploited system near the border of the two houses comes into question. Disagreements having been already quite common between the two, the incident was the drop that made the glass overflow. The two houses find themselves on the brink of all-out war.
-
Pirates, taking advantage of the multiple problems the legal factions of Sirius are facing, are running rampant. Trade convoys become larger and larger, as well as more heavily defended, in an attempt to protect their precious content.
-
There are multiple incidents in which the Bounty Hunters’ Guild stuck their nose in where they shouldn’t have, including one such event where a BHG wing was found flying inside of Alaska, which is highly restricted space. As a result of all these problems, Bounty Hunters begin to lose customers of all types.
-
The Order is quite busy trying to defend themselves against multiple enemies, including the Liberty Navy, who send out frequent patrols to try and flush them out. They remain a highly secret organization, which earns them the suspicion and hostility of most factions.
-
After the activation of the hyper gate, most of the Nomads were drained of much of their power, and so many of them went into stasis as a direct result of this. However, those that remained awake had grouped together again, and had sufficient time to regain much of their lost energy. With the vast majority of the humans distracted with problems of their own, and the Order busy trying to simultaneously remain secret and defend themselves against further attacks, they manage to launch a crippling attack on Toledo. Fortunately, many Order pilots manage to escape from the destruction of their home planet, and flee to a fallback position in a newly discovered system they had been developing.
-
At the same time as this attack, another group of Nomads somehow open a jump hole inside the Grande Negara, the remnants of the Texas Incident in which the long-range jump gate experiments failed catastrophically when a cloud of dark matter came into contact with the gate. The Nomads then proceed to the utter destruction of everything in the system, be it ship, station, planet, anything, using some kind of unknown super-weapon. The humans inside the system are nearly all killed in the invasion. Afterwards, the same thing happens to Bering, Hudson and Hamburg after the Nomads simply bypass the jump gate encryptions. The devastation is total for the four systems; the losses, both financial and human, are devastating.
-
Such destruction is not to go unheeded by either of the affected houses. Both Liberty and Rhineland send scouts through their respective jump gates leading into the invaded areas. None return. In desperation, all legal access to the systems is disabled and closely guarded by a battleship on the Liberty side. The same procedure soon follows on Rhineland’s side.
-
The string of devastated systems is dubbed the Hellfire Sector.
-
Rhineland is still fighting with Kusari, who have marched closer with Rhineland’s distraction. No help will come for the isolated people of Rhineland, for all paths leading to and from of Rhineland are hostile. Fortunately, they still retain enough firepower to fend off any assaults against key systems.
-
Some Liberty and Rhineland pilots who have survived the purging of the Hellfire Sector by the Nomads find themselves trapped within, and seek a way out. Some jump holes remain, but the trapped ships are hounded relentlessly by the invading Nomads, who are building a handful of bases within the sector.
-
The strike at Leeds ends forcefully when Bretonian police oblige workers to return to the many factories of the planet. Friction and animosity grow amongst the disgruntled people, and a large group of them manage to escape police custody and flee the planet in stolen vessels. After a long and harrowing flight through the system, they happen upon a jump hole and enter it. It leads them to Dublin, where their cause is heard by a Molly patrol. They are greeted with open arms. The Mollies have found fresh pilots for their group.
-
Communications between all houses, excluding those between Liberty and Bretonia who still have a commercial and political alliance, grind to a near-halt. Rhineland cannot communicate with anyone but Kusari, and the emperor of Kusari is unwilling to negotiate with Rhineland at all.
-
The future seems grim, but it’s only when things seem at their very darkest that things will improve. That or the Nomads will destroy all of human kind.
*Please note this is due to change and modification - this is NOT the final draft.
