Ship class varies from universe to universe. Some of them have for example:

Cutters - smaller than corvettes usually. I consider them a true gap between capitals and snubs.

Now for some more specialized ships, they are for example:

Electronic Warfare Ship - equipped with long range sensors, awacs, jammers, emp stuff, you name it.

Minelayers - for laying mines

Blockade Runners - as I understand, they are transports used for breaking blockades to supply the front or planet or station.

When it comes to snubs, Freelancer is poor in classes too. Aside from LFs, HFs and VHFs there are more like…

Medium Fighter - A transition between LF and HF maybe.

Assault Fighter - I understand it as a snub more heavy than a VHF for assault roles but not a bomber.

Bombers - of different size, Light, medium, heavy, form bombing.

Strategic Bomber - I don’t know if such class is used somewhere,
but I use it for a heavy bomber equipped with nuclear or damn devastating missiles and torpedoes for bombing space installations and planets, or just a tender for 1 really big missile (something like a Neutron-S missile from Robotech)

@Kuze - a lot of those are roles, not hull classes.

An example of real world ship class:

Nimitz Class Super Carrier

Ship Class: Nimitz
Hull Class: Super Carrier

George W Bush Class Super Carrier

Ship Class: George W Bush
Hull Class: Super Carrier

Ship class and Hull Class are/can be two totally different things.

Another example:

Halifax Class Frigate.

Ship Class: Halifax
Hull Class: Frigate

Ah yea true, my bad.

As for the background story:
Keep in mind that a military doesn’t order a new ship class to be designed, if it hasn’t a new threat from the enemies to match. War industry progress is a result of challenge and necessity, not surplus budget. Thus the new ship fits a role that hasn’t been covered before or that needs a restock and major update to keep compensating a danger to a different class caused by the enemy’s new introductions.

Sol, you’re work is getting so detailed that you’ll have to start designing your ships with animation in mind, folding wings and pop up weapons etc.

Trust me, I used to hate the idea, myself. Eventually I was forced to start, and after a while, I got good at it. I even enjoy it. Do eet. Do eet nao.

Ah texturing, everyone hates the shear idea of texturing a ship or anything. I do hate it to, I sucks at it, I need to learn it too (making textures from scratch, not texturing with vanilla FL ones).

Its reaaaaaaaaaaaaly not that hard, gentlemen. The most annoying part of it is generating good UVs. After that, its a cakewalk, just time spent. Sit down, and just do it. That’s really all there is to it.
