/v/lancer: A mod for bros by bros
-
1.) Ask the authors if they agree that their ressources get used by your mod. If they agree, there is no reason to remove them
2.) Remove all the contents for which mod authors didn’t grant you permissions.Seriously, I mean, if you are making a mod, a application or whatever and spend a lot of work for it, would you like to see people claming this work as their own?
What if I, for example, just copy your mod and name it “Bas’ uber mod for th4 pwn00rz”? Would like to see this happen? This isn’t a treatment, but you might should think about this situation. Would you like such a thing? Can’t imagine you do.
And a friendly warning from me: No matter, how many fans you have, how many players are at your server, there ARE important reasons why you shouldn’t lost a friendship to The Starport.
There aren’t many places where you will get modding support for Freelancer, especially if you are stuck with a problem, and moreover, you won’t get access to the admins internal area. Do I have to mention that sentimental topics are handled there? Those are, for instance, server security, cheaters, cheat protection, server tools and many more.Oh, and btw: FriendlyFire has created a mod with a devteam as well. So he knows about what he is speaking.

Well for one there’s a difference between ripping a model or texture, which is what you’re implying the /v/lancer devs did, and ripping a whole mod.
Also, “Bas’ uber mod for th4 pwn00rz” is a great name, I think I’ll use it for the mod I’m making.

To be honest.
I’d actually like it, /v/lancer is made according to the specifications of /v/, its made for the bros, so I really don’t care if anything unique to it was stolen, considering it wouldn’t do much. Hell, many of the features we’d LOVE to see in other mods. -

e: Also if people had just said “hey can you credit any stuff you’ve yoinked from stuff I’ve made” instead of “HOLY SHIT A MOD THEFT HAS TRANSPIRED” things would have been totally chill from the start.

Don’t worry, I am definitivly not going to steal ANYTHING
Well for one there’s a difference between ripping a model or texture, which is what you’re implying the /v/lancer devs did, and ripping a whole mod.
Nope, I just assumend that there might be something true about the postings of some mod makers here (OPR8R, FriendlyFire) because I know them very well and I am 100% sure that they don’t write such statesments if they aren’t sure about.
I personally haven’t seen any stealing of mod ressources, I am not saying that there isn’t any stealing NOR do I say there is. I just have a very bad memory sometimes, sry. I simple can’t say anything.OK…a much better example then
I take a popular programm…hm, which one? Winamp? Ok…Imagine you are the project leader and leading programmer of Winamp.
Now I re-release it under a totally new name and claim it as my own: “Bas l4m0rz music player”.
Would you really like this move? Also, I can assure you that almost nobody, if everyone at all, will help if you run into ANY problems. Freelancer modders have lifed mostly in contrary respect of each other, so there isn’t such a high chance that they are going to help someone who stole someone’s work, even if it wasn’t from the ones you asked for help.

.I can guarantee you that the makers of winamp would find this hilarious, and would commend you if you were ever able to get your downloads into double digit figures.

Also from what I’ve seen, the majority of mod makers I’ve had the displeasure of talking to treat the small changes to a number of config files as their life’s work, and I am absolutely not surprised at all that the first response to anything was “ZOMGTHIEF”, this whole situation is ridiculous, y’all are babies.

Well for one, Winamp is free anyway.
Second, if you made a media player that looked and functioned the same as WInamp, I’d be perfectly fine with it.
I wouldn’t use it because Winamp is better, but I wouldn’t care.
-
This is NOT about the success of the stolen application.
Do you know how EXACTLY winamp is free? Do you know the exact license? I don’t know it without searching for it (I am tired right now), there are many licenses covering the term “Free software”. It might be that you have to credit the authors of winamp if you use any parts of the application.
-
Who cares about Winamp?

You know what is actually ridiculous?
You coming to this place telling us about your cool and unique mod, while its actually a rip-off of the mods developed by the ppl you are showing your mod. And then complaining about the bad reactions… lolDoesnt make any sense at all.
-
Just stop while you’re ahead winamps under a proprietary license and that itself has no relevance to the discussion at hand anyways.
This discussion is only about how every freelancer mod team has a stick up there ass about actually making something fun and unique rather then trying to take credit for there own effects that have no effect on game play even if they have no real proof because this tiny little video HAS NONE. Though once the mod is actually released and there happens to be stolen then you actually have a claim but right now nobody has nothing on nobody and even if anyone does just about anything and everything in /v/lancer could change based upon fanbase suggestion and new and scary ideas.

This is NOT about the success of the stolen application.Sure it is, to an extent. You’re implying that the /v/lancer dev stole something and won’t be successful because this wonderful little site won’t advertise for him, when the ‘group’ that we are a part of is many times larger than this site.
And besides, you’re using examples of stealing entire applications or games or whatever, when everyone else is saying that one texture or model has been stolen. That’s like saying someone would steal a car for the cupholder.
-
It’s not about whether this site gives you support. We do not condone using other people’s work because we think it’s wrong. Simple as that. Personally, I’m rather sad to see that some people apparently have no respect for that.
It’s odd, though, that you seem to revel in rubbing it in our faces so much.

Trolls, remember?
-
-The people behind the /v/lancer mod have not claimed that they created everything themselves.
-You are making mods for god’s sake. It’s like making fanfiction, flash animation or youtube videos in tribute of a franchise. Do not claim that it’s different because it’s not.
-This mod was created for having fun. This isn’t some MY E-PEEN IS LARGER THAN YOURS I HAVE CREATED A WORK OF ART BOW DOWN AND WORSHIP ME sort of deal like I see a lot of in modding communities INCLUDING THIS ONE.
-Please contact a doctor as soon as possible. It appears that several of you have had large rods violently inserted into your anus. That includes some of the /v/irgins.

Not crediting the original authors is the same as claiming them as your own. It’s only common courtesy to at least mention it…
A mod is still work made by people. It still required time and effort. The fact that the platform is an existing game does not change that in any way. On top of that, the discussion is centered on models and textures which are, on their own, works of art just like digital art is, because they are digital art.

“Not crediting the original authors is the same as claiming them as your own.”
Well that’s like, your opinion, man.
“A mod is still work made by people. It still required time and effort. The fact that the platform is an existing game does not change that in any way. I still do not see how this is different from any of the things I listed in my previous post. I must, however, applaud your maturity in handling this thread. Most people would have banned anyone who tried anything remotely like this.

Actually, if it’s giving credit you want, we’ve told the /v/lancers various times who made what in the mod, and the readme does already give appropriate credit, and will stay this way, except for Crossfire.
