You might try installing the Discovery Mod. Once this is installed you will be able to get online because all of the necessary stuff is setup for you (the same is true of most mods).

There are many other Freelancer mods available in the community and I suggest you try a few of them.

Exactly HOW did you install the server patches / GLS workaround? Most of them come in FLMM format, which is essentially a .zip file (.zip.flmod) and you need Freelancer Mod Manager to install them.

The GLS workaround can be downloaded in .zip.flmod format here:

honestly, this is not a request for advertisement…
however, most servers run with mods currently and have to have the GLS implemented, cuz most players would not get online without it and without knowing how to. in general, vanilla servers are rare and boring as there are nearly no more people at a time there. mods are nearly not an alternative anymore but the very one sensible solution.

I have to agree with this, although there are a few notable Vanilla servers (FLU, Hamburg etc.) the bulk of them are just boring. I suggest you use some of the larger mods like Discovery, Evolutions, Tekagi’s Treasure, Shattered worlds, MU, etc. Trust me, it pays off much more to learn a few more systems then stay in the dark forever.

Here’s how you load and activate any mod you want, ours is just for example…

You need to do this:

1. Download Freelancer Mod Manager (FLMM):-
http://downloads.rrjds.com/FLMMInstaller1.31.exe

Double-click on it when it’s downloaded,and it will install.

2. Download the mod:
http://downloads.rrjds.com/RRJDS282ModR3.zip.flmod

Double-click on it when it’s downloaded and FLMM will start up and open it and add it to its list of mods.

When it has closed, start FLMM from the shortcut or START - All Programs - Freelancer Mod Manager. It will show all mods it knows about, just select RRJDS 2.82 and click Activate.

Then come on in and join us.

OK, aside from the fun and our mod being quite good…

There are many excellent mods out there, and many helpful players to get you started.

When you start Multiplayer Internet, you will see a list of servers. Some of them will not be selectable if they are not running the same version of Freelancer as you.

You can click on the list headings to sort the list in the order that you want.

(Ours is called RRJDS 282 mod - www.rrjds.com)

Select the server that you want and connect to it.

When you join any server, just make a new character and start it. You will start docked on Planet Manhattan.

To see who is online press Y.

You will see a list of players and which system each one of them is in.

If there is someone else in New York, just press ENTER, type “Hey guys can anyone help me out here, I’m new!” and press ENTER again. If you look closely you will see the small messaging window said “System>”. The message you sent will be seen by any player in the same system as you.

You can talk to any player even if he is not in your system by clicking on his name in the list, press ENTER, and you will see his name in the small messaging window. Type your message and press ENTER.

Come on in, the water’s great! And we’d love to see you on our server, so would all other admins.

I got Helloween’s double-negative, I’m not taking the piss, it’s just my sense of humour and I wish I were half as good in German or Russian as you guys are in English.

I sometimes translate from English to French or Greek and I can see the mess these translators make, so I knew it would make a real mess of that one!

Life gets too serious sometimes.

Google Translate is far better than BabelFish.
