Heyo one and all

Hey there everyone, just got sucked back into freelancer by a friend running a tiny vanilla server, and forgot up until now what an awesome game this really is. amazed it’s still so alive and kicking in it’s own way too, and people are still modding it 7 years down the line.
That said it’s something I want to try my hand at too. Nothing terribly major mind you. Just wanted to take a couple baby steps and play around with making custom weapons or fiddling with ship specs (not modeling so much as just editing the stock ones in the main game) Maybe at some point work up to a custom system.
Only problem is I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed you could say, a lot of the tutorials I’ve found on lancer reactor and other sites seem to start in the middle, or assume you know all about the modder tools already, and know exactly what does what. That a lot of the links on the starport here seemed to lead to empty pages. So if anyone could point me to page 1 of the weapon editors handbook =p Or just a few tutorials for a beginners beginner when it comes to this stuff, much obliged hehe. ^_-
EDIT: Forgot to also ask, which tools would I need for simple editing and modding?

if it’s only about weap and ship specs, you would need an SDK (pack with decrypted versions) of the ini files (yes its far better than the bini decoder) and a simple text editor such as notepad. tutorials on conventional coding thingies you can find in their greatest amount over at the starport archive in the freelancer community network. the structure of ini files is quite simple and fast to understand, the single parameters however are to learn like vocabulary of a foreign language except for they sound nearly the same what they mean. also, take a look on the starport wiki modding database. it is quite incomplete yet but you will find explanations for several files more technical and presize than several tutorials would give.
and welcome to The Starport
