Moving textures
-
I was told by a player that he has seen a moving texture in another mod on a billboard.
He says that the texture moves from the left to the right, well i’ve never seen such a billboard exept the rules Billboard in NY on the Crossfire server but i havent thaught about that for ages. But now I’m rly interessted in that stuff and would like to ask if there’s a tutorial anywhere or if someone could give me a hit how this is done.
Ty in advance

Could’ve been either Freelancer: War-Torn or Monkey Universe. Maybe The Underverse, I don’t know if they have animated billboards. WT isn’t released yet, though we did release some videos and such around the net. MU uses (or used, last time I saw it) the WT billboards for inter-server advertising.
There may be other animated billboards in other mods, but those are the ones I know.

The billboard part which appears to move is just one polygon (though it can be as many as you wish really).
First ones I’ve attempted I just copied over the MaterialAnim branch from Solar\dockable\nomad_lair.cmp, then renamed the texture entry there.
Stock like that moves your texture from top to bottom as you’re looking at your mesh in MS3d’s texture editor, so if you want it to go sideways, the easiest way is to just rotate your mapping 90 degrees while you’re in there.
On a bilboard you’ll want to add “Two” in the material library entry for Type for double sided viewing. Though you could also make a folded bilboard and keep it one sided, but that’ll look like arse if you’re using opacity. There’s still one other form I have yet to see. In a few txm files, there are frame-based animations for texture. As of late I’ve been too wrapped up with other priorities to dig further into it. But once that is used (if it even can be) it’ll open up some neat possibilities like short cartoons and such, or some pretty sweet planet atmospheres, all sorts of good things.

Well explosions use an animated left to right top to bottom 16 frame texture. I made a hi-res animated one just for the nuke. took a while, but that could also be what they used for the billboard. I think animated textures like that are only for effects though, but its quick to check

I’ve noticed there are ALE effects for monitor screens; like the horizontal line and static or something close to that. If it’s usable on a computer screen, then it should be adaptable to a billboard. That would let the last type of texture animation come into play (frame matrix). Was not able to get it to work before the ALE editor came out, but hopefully possible now, just need the time to fiddle with it

WOW, i think that mean “Keep safe distance”. very good job.
PS, you better do Hpeizontal Flip to the textures to make the words looks like this ;):

getting that in on it would be awesome, just to make things more realistic ^^
