Making FLHook compstible with FLAC
-
Maybe the guys earning money - ups sry means getting minimum donations - with FLAC?
;D(OH NO i did it again - but i was forced beyond my control ……)

I think i am not the only one who would be happy if someone managed to make FLHook compatible with FLAC.
There many reasons but there are two main ones :
a) dozens of very useful admin commands
b) socket connectionsI wonder who would be happy to see a FLHook versiom that is compatible with FLAC and who is able & got time to create it… if we are enough I am sure we can make it ::)
Im pretty sure that Eagle could, if he wanted to, make a plugin for FLHook on which FLAC would run.
-
Eagle said (i don’t remember where) he could, but also added he doesn’t intend spending his time on a software which ceased to be developed by its creator.
-
I dont see a reason to make FLHook compatible to a closed source program, while we have a completely open source, powerful plugin interface to be used.
Sounds exactly like Microsoft and Linux that does lol
-
Its maybe a similar situation As some people disapprove FLAC being a comercial software, and those people are actually the main FL programmers we will hardly get a deal…
-
Cannon’s hit it on the nail IMO. I believe there should be “one server software to rule them all”, but that’s just my cheesy opinion ;D
In all seriousness, FLHook is closing the gap with FLAC with each passing day. I don’t know what FLAC does that FLHook doesn’t firsthand (not having used an unlocked version of it), however I believe the main, main point people have with using FLAC is support. Since they pay money for the software, they have a right to ask for support from its programmer, Eagle. With FLHook, if something doesn’t work, you’re stuck with either fixing it yourself or hoping some benevolent programmer does it for you.
Of course that doesn’t mean Eagle always fixes the problems found, from what I’ve gathered… He’s hacking at them, though
-
FLAC still to this day, leaves any other server-side software for dead. As for support, Eagle always fixes the problems, sure, it may take him a while to find it, but he always does in the end. As for compatibility, CountCornelius, you obviously haven’t the time or skills to create any 3rd-party plug-ins like bulldogg for example, who has used this option to it’s advantage. And what about those server admins who might not want or agree with all of the commands you want in FLAC, which is a reason Eagle left it open for the Admins to create their own plug-ins, to manage their own custom commands. FLAC has been and still is the longest supported and developed, not to mention pretty much the best server-side and anti cheat software you’ll find for Freelancer.
-As for the cost, it’s nothing compared to what you’re getting, for the amount of time and effort Eagle has put into such a program.
Just my three cents.

Well, look at FLAC as the more shiney polished server admin system, or as you wish the Windows of server admin / anti cheat tools. Lots of its config is done in a nice shiney GUI.
FLhook is more dependant on its config files, all manual and little or none settings possible without a restart while with FLAC you can set things on a live server.
I do however think that FLAC eats up lots of more resources and it fully supports multi processor enviroments, on FLAC its self and on FLserver. Both systems have a plugin function, FLhook has more “open” code than FLAC does, and i believe the FLAC plugins only work with C## where Flhook supports all flavour created DLL’s written from C## to VB.
FLAC has an autoupdate system wich, sometimes, can be an ass as there can be faults created with the update and the admins have no controle over that.
Comparing FLAC and FLhook is like comparing Windows with Linux, FLAC is more user friendly and you can add certain plugins, but only with sources the developers gave free. FLhook is more open, less user friendly, no shiny GUI so IFSO is still your best friend with FLhook (or some other server admin tool where you can edit player files.
I have used FLAC and FLhook, for me it doesn’t make so much difference, but if you run a server and you have a staff with little or no coding experience (like me) FLAC would be my choise, even if it costs some cash.

I wont participate in the FLHook vs FLAC discussion, just to clear one thing up:
FLhook is more dependant on its config files, all manual and little or none settings possible without a restart while with FLAC you can set things on a live server.
This is wrong, pretty much any setting can be updated on FLHook while its running (using the rehash command). Also, FLHook can unload or load plugins while running which FLAC cannot do IIRC. So it is actually the other way round.
-
And IMO, a GUI is something relatively simple which could be made as a wrap-around for FLHook… Just like how IFSO works, actually. Put a GUI which changes the config files and sends a rehash command to FLHook. I guess it wouldn’t be too hard to make.
Point is, I doubt any of the parties would be willing to make concessions in order to have some sort of compatibility, and the debate of FLAC vs FLHook is rather pointless: the best tool will eventually win, no matter what is said, and every server has its own requirements which may or may not point it to one tool over the other.
-
Indeed, there has also already been a GUI for FLHook (Freelancer Hook Console by Sajuuk http://talonstrike.co.uk/HavenAdmin/index.php?topic=282.0), also there is a PHP webinterface for FLHook on http://www.freelancerserver.de/v2/topic,12314_FLHook_PHP_Admin_tool.html
-
The last version of FL Hook Console is unavailable because the link is dead…

Your all wrong the best program available at the moment is Lancer Solurus’s Auto Updater.
Anyway to be honest i dont think either program is better than the other both have pros and cons, any problems i had with FLAC were quickly solved by supplying feedback to Eagle.
At the end of the day we have 2 awesome server operator programs and its down to the server owners what they use and i dont see any point in debating or arguing over which is better because they are as good as each other.
