Dear gawd, Webster's has really gone downhill

A other thing that disturbes me is that general knowledge became less taught in school (subjects like geography, politics, history) but it comes up again and again - For instance, in the news. If you have a better general knowledge you are able to draw more nexus - And so I think general knowledge is very important. Unfortunaly this seems to be also a problem in Germany, many pupils dont know much or anything about the DDR/East Germany or RAF (Red Army Faction) or other things about history, politics and geography

I have to say I’m thankful to be 18; I’m “riding the wave” here, slipping into the school system RIGHT before it changes for the worse. It’s so close I often see the changes happen the year after I leave (for example when I left high school, the year after the whole system was overhauled).
Now, I haven’t yet heard of allowing text speech here - thankfully, Quebec is very protective of French grammar and spelling - but I’m fearful this might actually get here sometime soon. However, I already see what omayksilo is speaking of: the majority of my friends are completely “dumb”. Not in the sense of being stupid, but they don’t read up on news, they don’t know history, they don’t care for politics, they forget the basic rules of polite society, etc. I’m being fearful of the future with people such as them sent out in the wild to replace the current CEOs, directors and workers around…

it’s common to see those in talks about getting removed since 99,99% of the students hate them.
Big whoop - are they going to remove math, too? I don’t see too many students enjoying that, either.
Anyone that gives any consideration to removing courses based on if students enjoy it or not need to be shot. Likewise, anyone that gives any consideration to allowing students 2 RITE LIKE DIS N THER SKOOL ESYZ needs to be hung.

Yeah, but in today’s world, “Math” is seen as some kind of perfection (think science, administration, etc.). History and Geography have taken the backseat.
-
I’ll be honest, I was never big on history when I was in school.
But these days I actually really regret not taking a greater interest in it. Now that I’m older (and hopefully more mature), it is easy to look back and say ‘Man, I should’ve been more interested in it.’ So what if people think it is a ‘hated subject’. How does one learn from past mistakes if they do not learn of the past?
Suppose its hindsight, easy to look at with years of experience.School isn’t always about enjoyment - it is about learning skills required for life. Fun time comes at the ring of the bell at the end of the day! ;D

Math was the only thing I really rather despised in school, due to a more artistic bias. But that being said, learning that sort of important thing is best done before exiting high school level. I am curious now if this sort of trend is sneaking into Asian systems as well. From a lazy American standpoint, I always at least held Japan’s education system in high regard. But I suppose cellphone usage is at least as widespread there. Brings back my little month long trip to Bulgaria a while back, was floored by how nearly every one there has at least 1 mobile.
Anyhow, getting back to it, there is really no excuse for our schools to let that sort of shorthand to slide on tests. If you think about it, it likely has been a contributing factor in the huge spread of fast food popularity, which has literally erm… ballooned our population. Ballooned as in little sausages ;D Patience and tolerance have undergone a similar slide downhill, at least in my experience.
Har, well I suppose it is rather fruitless even bringing it up if I don’t get off my arse and actively do something about it. Oh well, had to get it off my chest -
I opened a right can of worms here didn’t I?
But I agree with all the comments made. Rest assured if any measures are taken to follow this line of education, there will be an outcry here and MANY petitions created. I know I will personally start one.
If they actually go ahead and follow through on thier ideas I will be moving abroad. I do not intend to raise children in a country that ignore the past and the world around them.

the school system here in norway is still working fine
but its kind of bad that people actually write like this “2 RITE LIKE DIS N THER SKOOL ESYZ”
hell i dont even know what ESYZ means, i guess its sys or something
EDIT: just looking at that properly, thats really stupid

Slightly off-topic, but I found it none-the-less appropriate for this subject:
(5:51:49 PM) IBLAMETHESCENERY: you know
(5:51:57 PM) IBLAMETHESCENERY: I’m always impressed with the quality of writing at IGN
(5:52:17 PM) IBLAMETHESCENERY: considering they’re writing for gamers, who by and large have forsaken complex sentence structure for LOL and MOAR -
Hahaha… now that is funny foxUnit01 ;D
It’s also fairly accurate
