3D Ripper DX

How do you think I’m getting all those ds1 ships? It captures a scene in game, every mesh, shader, texture and then you import it into 3ds max where you can isolate objects within that scene and export them. Magic.
As well as capturing in 3dr (better option by far) it can capture in .obj format so you can use blender, maya, etc, even milkshape I suppose, although it will no doubt have trouble with complex scenes as you will be capturing too much data for it to import.
Works with dx 6, 7, 8, 9 games but not 10 or 11.
Opportunities abound for extracting models from games that you otherwise could not convert a model from. There are some videos showing how it works on youtube.

so, if i got it right, with this tool, you can, playing a game, grab the geometry rendered onscreen together with all of the textures and convert it afterwards to a format you like? sounds like an alternative to all of the conversion tools and plug-ins

Don’t see much of a problem using this, as long as the original artist(s) are credited (might have to dig through game credits to find all the info). It’s not much different from constructing a model by hand, using a picture for a guide. The design is still some one else’s, even if you modeled it yourself and hand made the textures, or changed the textures to suit a specific mod’s context.
Maybe now I’ll get that damned Ka’ark (sp?) Destroyer converted and animated ^.^ Was just one damn texture hiding from me.

It all comes down to personal choice whether you’re prepared to take advantage of this facility. I simply wanted to make it known this option exists.
I can’t say I’m entirely surprised that some have raised the usual issue of stealing and right or wrong, but then again it’s very likely that those same people have at some point used materials, concepts, ideas etc that they did not create. For heavens sake Gib, what’s the story with the tachyon and starlancer ships, you didn’t dream those models up did you?
Some people climb down from their horse to drink milk from the trough and then quickly climb back on their horse and forget they’ve done it. There’s no moral high ground to be had here, just get down from your horse and share the milk. We’re not here to judge each others moral integrity are we?

There are two schools here, there will always will be. What some are trying to say is that there is a chance a game company will come after you for ripping models from their game. I know at least one FL mod that was pulled for this and mine almost did with the AFF (Angels Fall First) ships (Even though they had giving me permission long ago). An author can evoke their rights at any time, it doesn’t matter how long it’s been out of print or they have moved out of this area of gaming. The other school is, it is public domain since it is on the internet and it is okay as long as they give credits (I’m talking about fan-based models from sci-fi shows which cannot be copyrighted).
You still have to tread lightly here since the models are straight out of the game, you never know when a game manufacturer will get a bug up it’s rear and say, “Hey, I don’t want that there”. Then you get the cease and desist order. More than likely, the older the game is the less chance of it getting noticed (They might not even exist anymore or care as a matter of fact).

I’ve no argument with that, you expect manufacturers and corporates to kick your behind, but I get pissed off a little when we start trying to tell each other whether we’re right or wrong when the vast majority of us are bending the rules most of the time. Many have said it before that we’re our own worst enemy, not the people who could really kick us where it hurts. Chances of them coming after you when you haven’t attempted to make money from their product is pretty slim, fortunately.

oh come on, don’t let us throw one more thread into the copyrights topic… its getting somewhat unoriginal and boring. in the end its up to each one of us personally, what he uses and how and whether he works himself or uses foreign work. we will not find a perfect compromise for all of us so let us keep where we are currently - every modder does what he feels is righ. both chess players may be successful, the risky aggressor and the defensive strategyst.
