Have you already had a good look around the forums here? Coz I’m pretty confident this has been brought up quite some times before and someone has no doubt posted a link or attached a file somewhere.
I’ll need to dig into ALE’s myself pretty soon, so I’ll have a look around. I’ll let you know when I found something useful.

this package has the ale editor and heaps of other useful stuff:

the XML Project also decodes ALEs into XML, and encodes back. it’s here in the downloads section.
