It's been years and i could use some tips.

i haven’t played freelancer since around 2006 or 05. since then the world servers have been taken offline, hardware has changed and i’m a total newb again.
what are some mods and utilities you guys would suggest to get started playing freelancer online again? i looked around the forums and saw some hints about a wide screen/modern resolution mod? also i’ve got a tab open with Global Server Workaround v1.0 i assume this is what i need to get started? will i need to know the address of a global server? and if so can i get some tips on where to find that?
i’m trying to get everything set up in advance of doing the final install processs so everything goes without hiccups and i can write a guide for my guilides on how to do this stuff up and we can ply the game together.
so any and all help would be greatly appreciated. thanks!
edit i should note we’re initially looking for the vanilla experience to play in, though i hear there’s a mod that extends that with new systems and ships that in character for the vanilla game. if anyone wants to give me a nod where to find that would be great. too.

Most mods, like Crossfire, have the Global Server Workaround already build in.

i think you misunderstand. i am not interested in single player at all.
rather just as vanilla as possible for the multplayer experience.

i am looking for mods that
add modern resolutions to the game
maybe hd versions of the normal textures.any info needed on using the global server work around mod to connect either to an existing server or server hosted by myself that fits my criteria.
i’m not looking for mods that add out of ip ships, single player specific content, or such.

oki installed the global server work around mod and the widescreen support mod.
but i’m having issues.
when i got o internet multiplayer it doesn’t generate a key. i’m playing with teh disc in my optical drive. but i’m on win8.
i tried with the workaround mod installed and uninstalled. niether makes a difference.
the widescreen mod doesn’t seem to be working although i followed the instructions. and even tried start an sp game and undocking as that was suggested in teh mod’s page.

Make sure you install the 1.1 update from Microsoft. Should still be available on their site. That should fix your MP ID problem.
With the JFLP update (I presume that’s the one you’re using), you need to undock and then set your resolution from the drop down list.
