I just received a (new in wrapper) copy of Freelancer via ebay. So am a total new player to this game and all of the Wing Commander series, although I have loaded all the early WC games available on GOG.
Installed the NoCD.exe and can now get into the game, so will be taking my first mission later today.
Have been playing the space MMO Entropy (Steam) for about 4 months and was pointed towards Star Citizen by some of the players in Entropy. So discovered this series of games which I had not played when they were new. I mostly played standalone, and turn-based games prior to 1.5 years ago.
I have recently pledged to SC and am also RandallOne there.
I’ll play Freelancer standalone until I get the mechanics down, and may join one of the servers if SC isn’t ready yet.

Look at this for a list of the most active multi player servers. There are numerous single player mods, recommended one is Crossfire.

Welcome to the forum.
I hope you have a lot of fun. FL is easily my favourite game!
I only play one mod, “Genesis”. Simply superb, in my opinion…

Hi and welcome to The Starport. Freelancer is the best choice for playing space sims. 11 years old and still being played. Many dedicated players for sure. 100’s of mods as well. Hope you enjoy the game.
Oh yeah, one more thing, Juni has a lot of boyfriends so, don’t try to claim her for yourself.

Greetings
Just a tip… The mechanics can change between mods/servers, once you get the basic’s down and your happy with your keymapping do the story (its awesome) then you’d be best to try a few mods out.
Keep in mind that fighting a wave of NPC’s and fighting a group (or even 1v1) in MP are vastly different beasts, again… this can also be mod centric and playstyles and flightsyles can vary wildly from the original game.
There are some utterly superb mods out there, and hopefully more to come… the game never really stopped evolving over the years, it’s a rich universe out there.
Happy Hunting Freelancer.
