It's about you!
-
I would further add to this by saying:
Whoever votes that the site “could be better”… Tell us what you want! In all honesty, complaining about a site won’t get you anywhere if you complain to yourself or your friends. Show us what you want to see changed, added, upgraded. Tell us what’s on your mind. It’s only this way that we’ll all be able to make the site even better than it already is. -
sorry, that was me checkin to make sure it worked lol
( I always think could be better is a cop out, it should be either yes, or no - reason)
-
I want this to work.
I haven’t followed those LR intrigues, but here are some problems I hope The Starport addresses:
-
LR was the de facto Freelancer browser’s nexus, and will no longer serve the purpose. We need one single unconditional hub site linking to everything. Ready links is what the web is all about. Now, LR Admin openly resenting that LR just advertises other sites & mods etc. (links) invites another site fill that role. “It’s about you” is just what we need. So, how can The Starport best assemble and present all sorts of links to the FL community? That’s mainly a web design problem answered sooner than later.
-
LR hosted downloads, all of them. We could really use a secure place to keep this stuff. Is The Starport up to it?
3)Freelancer never had a real general community forum. This would be invaluable. I think some concrete steps to promoting this include a big honking forums button on the main page, links to forums (e.g. tutorials and other content in forums), publicly searchable forums, and some off-topic indulgence.
- Lancer’s Reactor this, Lancer’s Reactor that. Reactionism is a problem. I hope The Starport sets its course objectively, by taking stock of what we’ve got now and what we need, no looking back.

- We have a custom and rather advanced Server Ring in creation, as well as a link area where we can put up any miscellaneous link that would not belong to the Server Ring.
EDIT: The Server Ring is now displayed to the public. Additions will be made over time!
-
The download area is publicly available, and download submissions are encouraged through the use of the “Submit File” button on the left hand menu.
-
While the forums won’t have a huge Forums button written in big neon sign, we’re expecting it to be the central node of the site. The forums are already searchable through the Search link at the very top, and we have put up the Miscellaneous forums precisely for Off-topic discussions.
-
The Starport is built around itself and the Freelancer community. This means we somehow cannot not mention TLR at some point. We are trying to be as independent as possible, but references to it are pretty much given.
If you have further questions, ask away! Remember that if you want to suggest anything, you are encouraged to do so

Hello ,
well i would like to see some basics about Freelancer , like a star map , shiplist ,factions , wrecklist , commodites , weaponlist and so on ^^ .
If possible permanent on the left side linked where the server ring is , get off from your seats . -
IMO, you need to show your support to the servers (in return, you get some of their traffic and links)
This should be done in things like server links, showing global players etc etc from flstat in blocks on the site.
Secondly, you need to get RSS feeds up ASAP, if there up i dont see them.
Thirdly, you really need to reach out to the community and show that you are neutral and a good alternative to the shambolic TLR
Fourth, you need to make sure that you have decent staff, bin the emotional kids now (if you have any)and keep well respected people on the staff.People will both visit and stay if you have good staff.
Fifth, operate reviews on mods, servers, utilities. mod of the year, utility of the year etc.etc.
Sixth. Get Screenshots of mods, put them up on the front page vary them, make it look different each time you visit, which in turn makes you want to visit more regularly.
Seventh, change the news items, as above, if theres no news, make some, so theres something new each time theres a visit.
Eighth, get your RSS feeds out to all the RSS repositories
Nine, optimise your site for freelancer in the SEO way.
Ten. get some well respected staff to go and visit all the MP freelancer server websites and post about starport and ask them to visit/link to your site and give them a link back straightaway on your homepage. The two quick ways to become number 1 for freelancer resources is - the existing FL MP community and second the internet SEO (search engine optimisation)
I know quite a bit about SEO and if you need some help I can offer it, but you need to get the legwork done on a ton of stuff asap.
Just some ideas, bin what you dont like and put the others in the mix…good luck.
-
We’re already planning a lot of that, don’t worry
Only point I’d have to leave out is with the MOTY/UOTY. How could we stay neutral, yet rate mods? If the public decides, the mods with the highest amount of members will always win. It’d be a touchy subject, don’t you think?

IMO, you need to show your support to the servers (in return, you get some of their traffic and links)
This should be done in things like server links, showing global players etc etc from flstat in blocks on the site. There is the ‘Server Ring’ which is up and operational.
Also if the Starport tool bar is downloaded there is a dropdown box with a list of servers and sites to select. More will be added to this dropdown list soon.
Secondly, you need to get RSS feeds up ASAP, if there up i dont see them.
I am planning on looking into this to work alongside the toolbar also.
Thirdly, you really need to reach out to the community and show that you are neutral and a good alternative to the shambolic TLR
That is the aim and goal of this place, and we think we are quite neutral already. How else do you think we can improve here? Ideas and suggestions to elaborate would we good.
Fourth, you need to make sure that you have decent staff, bin the emotional kids now (if you have any)and keep well respected people on the staff.People will both visit and stay if you have good staff.
The two site Admins are myself and FriendlyFire. The staff team are Lancer Solurus, W0dk4, Crazy, Sion, Cheesy, Torch and Worfeh. All prominent members of the Freelancer Community.
Sixth. Get Screenshots of mods, put them up on the front page vary them, make it look different each time you visit, which in turn makes you want to visit more regularly.
Whilst the site builds up, we are relying on members and visitors to submit thier screenshots and news on different Mods. Once the site is up and running fully, thier will be individuals solely responsible for this area.
Ten. get some well respected staff to go and visit all the MP freelancer server websites and post about starport and ask them to visit/link to your site and give them a link back straightaway on your homepage.
This is already underway. There is already underway.
I would love to speak to you about SEO.
Please feel free to add me on MSN: [email protected] and we can speak.
Thanks,
R.

Not sure if this is the place to put this but:
The name….I got the E-mail from Freelancer: War Torn, when I opened it the first thing I saw was “The Starport” now instantly I was like “What the heck could this be? Oh well…” well I clicked the link and it brought me to the nice front page. Everything here is an “Instant” grab for me. I like it ^_^

**We welcome all visitors here. Feel free to look around and see what you can find. Freelancer’s success is due to the ability to mod the game and also to the many users who have contributed their work to the common good.
So please sit down and enjoy your stay and feel free to ask anything about Freelancer, we will try to answer any questions that you have.**

Shade Yuka,
Good to see you made it. Welcome to The Starport. ;D

Add a IRC java applet for the irc channel #the-starport .
I recommend pjirc : http://www.pjirc.com/main.php -

On this, I think a PlanetQuake “mod of the week” or “mod of the month” is in order - in the old days of Quake 2 at least, a mod was chosen as MotW for random reasons. It couldn’ve been a new mod doing something cool, an older mod being brought back to life, etc. For all intents and purposes, the mod selection might as well have been random, but it was a great way for reletively new mods in the scene, or old mods being resurrected, to get some well-earned attention.
I don’t like a user-voted MotW because, as you said, it is nothing more than a popularity contest. I’m sure many are willing to argue this, especially since mods are usually popular for a reason, however I really view MotW as a chance for un-assuming projects to hit the major spotlight and get more than just a passing glance.
(also, on a side note, the “quote” button is a bit wonky, at least for me - it seems to do the whole thing in a completely seperate page)
-
yea, its not set to open up the page in the same part of jooml,a ill take a look at it soon or if one of the other admins can >.> hehe

I much prefer that concept and I agree it could be a nice thing to do.
As for the Quote button, I’m well aware of that and am looking into fixing it

What about a Freelancermap?
Since Arbiter.de is down I dont know a web-map, except the one of the station-network.de, but the page is in german:
Click
The map is in english, so you may could ask for permission to use it on Starport, however, I also searched for the autor but wasnt able to find an e-mail or IM address. You may could ask at our forum, maybe our “Big Bosses” know an answer
Btw, quote is still not fixed ^^
-
I also miss a spamm channel here >_>
-
Maybe add a user string for xfire user names? It is a quite popular programm and used by some members here.
