Constructive criticism is good, sabotage is bad

I believe that some of the people that vote have never even looked at the mod. I know last year there were a lot of votes cast that were zero because of the Mod Awards that happen every year (There here again). This also holds true when they comment on something that is not even a feature of the mod (i.e. Example, I get tons of comments to make my mod SP compatible, which I won’t do). There will always be morons out there that try to cast any mod into the dumpster because they don’t like you or they’ve been banned from the server.

Indeed Crossfire is doing PR work but that is limited to updating the moddb site with pics, videos and new content, posting news and sending out newsletters (including calls on my forum to vote for all FL mods).
The rating for Crossfire was over 9 and dropped to 8,8 (maybe not such a big difference that other mods experience but thats explainable by the amount of votes that already existed).
MOTY are a free vote and eventhough Freelancer is a very old game the FL mods have many visitors and very high rankings. Based on the visitor count many mods belong to the top100, some to the top20 and the mod ratings are pretty good compared to many others. There are about 4700 possibilities where those “negative” votes came from.
To say that it is unfair to vote for a mod without knowing it might be true but on the other side the votes are free and the visitors are allowed to vote for any reason. They can vote if they dont like the game. They can vote because they dont like the genre. They can vote because they dont like the mod presentation or the pics on those sites. And they can vote because they dont like our nose.
Its their decision and unfortunatly thats how it is working and to be honest I care more about the MOTY votes than about the ratings atm. In the end we should not forget that a top100 ranking on the MOTY is a better ad than all the ratings on the FL mods together.
Right now there is much more activity at Moddb than in the months before and the chances to catch negative votes is much higher aswell. I personally have learned to care more for the ppl which give positive comments than for those which only have to rant and i guess i will ill do the same with the rating.
Edit: Oh and the MOTY rules say that votes are getting checked and fake votes get removed (just in case that someone is doing fake votes)

The world has too many narrow-minded, petty tools.
Unfortunately, this isn’t just an issue that we face with ModDB. These days, I think if you go to any site that offers voting systems or the ability to leave a quick comment, people will ‘take sides’. The consoles and how their ‘fanboys’ react is a perfect example of why this issue is a mainstream issue.
At the end of the day, some people treat the Internet like they were back at school - like a popularity contest.
Honestly, I wonder how sad these people are. What sort of jollies do you get for giving something a low score. Chances are, said voters are incapable of even contributing a morsel of what those who have done the work have accomplished. They probably feel ‘big’, hidden behind their computer screen and can say what they like. At the same time, I bet if these guys were to be in front of those why were badmouthing, they would say nothing!
It is such a shame there isn’t a Internet-wide mute button for people like that.

there are people in this world who are jelious of other peoples talent or theyre personality. theyre are people in this world who are going to love you or hate you. i just say if you can do a better job than me the tools are out there download them and lets see what you can do. i am a man who knows his limits i put something out there. you like it great play it you dont you dont. my life still goes on my bills have to get paid thats it. i personally gave everybodys mod a good vote cause you all are better at it than me. have a nice day ;D

…. oh my … down from “10.0” to “6.2”
That’s almost funny.From our forum:
…. ……
some silly people seem 2 have voted a “0” on most of the mods
as 2 read @ The-Starport and we are down on a “6.2”.Maybe ‘inspired’ by the very well done
“[ur=http://www.moddb.com/games/freelancerl]Save Freelancer Petition”
by darthmop1.
Check the comments mentioned by w0dk4 at the Starport
and all player please- give us your vote http://www.moddb.com/mods/wts-world-ccn
- feel free 2 comment that behaviour especially @ moddb
- stay away from negative votes for Crossfire,
cause it’s a nice mod and i m sure that’s not caused by OPR8D or the Crossfire team.
…… what can can i say:
Better silly votes on the WWWW, than they go to their school and shoot people. We shouldn’t seriously expect, that everyone with internet access is nice.
And i also think, that being ‘not so nice’ requires a reaction,
if a certain level is reached. -

Okay, I decided to spin this our way a bit. I’ve made reply comments on the recent band of idiots that thought it would be fun to make new accounts and bash other FL mods. Â I don’t know where they’re from, nor do I really care. I think what they’ve done is pretty deplorable and we shouldn’t have to sit by and watch this happen. Â I’ve also made a post here: http://www.moddb.com/games/freelancer/#503137
I urge all developers, particularly within this community, to make a comment there. Â We need to stick together folks, or FL will fade quicker than it already is. Â

Ya, I have my moments

Speaking of idiots and mod bashing, i’ve had my fair share of this over the last few months.
I mistakenly accused another developer (BSG Venom - Galactica Dawn of War) of causing disruptions on my server who i have now apologised to over the incident as it turned out it wasn’t him. It was someone else on this forum that was the guilty party.
It’s bad enough crap like this goes on, and you get random people bothering to give other people a hard time, because they’re either jealous, are just untalented idiots with an axe to grind, or simply have nothing better to do.
Some people love bringing other people down, what upsets me is when they are members of this forum as was the case with me and the goings on on moddb and my server.
Richard has been helping me out with the development of my Phoenix mod and has been very supportive, and believe me i appreciate the input. It’s frustrating when i see a fellow modder given a hard time by random idiots who know nothing about the time and effort involved in what most of us all do here.
It’s a hobby firstly, but a lot of us run servers as well and put a lot of effort into keeping our respective communities alive. Some people clearly don’t appreciate this which is why i’ve grown a thick skin  regarding certain people as life is too short and let’s face it, we are talking about a game after all.
There are some people however……

I really dont understand why this “crap” happens in FL… I’ve seen this year after year… and now it seems… there’s a whole bevy of “punks” out there who think becuase the games a few years old that they can get away with Cheating, Hacking, and any other antisocial FL “practice” they can getaway with… this is just the “escalation” … these kids were never taught “edicate” (nor i to spell lol)… and see the web as a “big smackdown” a place to hack on each other… post fights… and be generaly obnoxious to all… We unfortunaly have to put or hard work and “love” out there to be used like a old punching bag by these fools… and they are fools… and this is a perfect example of why im going “underground” for the next 6 months to finish mine… no modDB… i’ve never trusted that site or gleamed any “real” info from them… and this is why (the same thing happens alot with HL2 mods too guys… alot!!) you won’t be seing XLR as a “contender”… ever… on Mod DB or up against u lot … I love this community too much to get into the whole “who’s gota better mod” thing… there all darn great!!
and i’ll never condone anything like this from any of my players… its just plain foulI feel sick now… and have to throw up… Dam and i woke in such a good mood too…

Bullies have always existed, electronic media gives them an even “safer” way to ply their trade.
Can anyone give me the link so I can see mod vote scores? Can’t seem to find anything but top 5 and latest, but not the scores others have referred to.
-
CF is down to 8.7 with totally 129 votes now so i assume that the crap rating is not over yet
the MOTY scores are not published except the top5 … moddb didnt even release the top100 ranking of MOTY 2007 (just which mods managed to be in the top100 but not the position or the number of votes)
based on the MOTY voting system where old members have more influence then short term members or guests the number of votes does not really matter but the quality of the vote does
-
I know it wont be as “grand”… but i think u guys/gals should start your own FL-MOTY award…
Kinda like the “emmys” lol… at least that way its “legit” and from the community… and (hopefully)
fair… i know im a dev… and i play everyone else’s mods… and i love em… we could also vote on
“best new breakthough” and start a “hall of fame” to honor long lost (but never forgotern) mods… sniff sniff…Just a thought… i have many… just wanted to share this one
-
I think that would be a great idea, personally. There really can be many different areas to have “awards” in. I think it would be fun.
And this “rating warfare” is stupid. Sorry to hear you got hit too, OPR8R
-
indeed a nice idea
about one year ago i have build some kind of mod database for my site where mod creators can present their work… unfortunatly I didnt have the time to improve it during the past year and it was not used (even I ignored it all the time ^^)but it would be possible to create such a presentation for mods that could be included into the big FL communities
make it part of the Save FL initiative
to include a vote button or different categories shouldnt be a hard problem thenbut still moddb is important coz we can use it to get new players and promote FL
based on the numbers of visitors FL belongs to the top10 games (which is amazing considering all those new ego shooters) -
I think it’s pretty clear now that a few people didn’t like to see FL so high in the ratings and decided to down us all out of spite. It’s impossible that every single mod has been tried and hated all the sudden by a few people… I’m pretty sure some modders for other games may want less high-ranked competition.
In any case, I read people would be interested in FL-MOTY awards. To be honest, we already thought about it but did not want to create any sort of jealousy between mod developers. We didn’t know how people would react if their mod wasn’t elected (after all, I think it’s fair to say that everyone thinks his or her own mod is the best or by the best and it is perfectly logical to assume so). It’s also pretty hard to do such things since for the most part the mods with the largest communities would immediately have an advantage over growing and smaller ones.
However, I’m throwing the question out there: with all this considered, would you still want that? It’d be a pleasure for us to organise such things, but we won’t do so if the community here does not want to. We can also do things like “Mod of the Week” or “Mod of the Month” or even a simple “Mod Spotlight” which would probably be better for FL as I think yearly contests are too far between. It’d also help give smaller mods advertising as the mod spotlight could be random.
I’m throwing ideas at you all here; what would you want to see?
-
I think a mod spotlight would be good, It doesn’t say the mod is the best it just advertises its features and a little insight on who created it
