[Freelancer Community News]Freelancer Feature Article needs your Screenshots!
-
Server Admins/Owners and Modders - this one is for you!
I am in the process of writing a Freelancer feature for one of the UK’s premier Xbox Live Fansites. This feature will be displayed in their PC Gaming News forum, their Review forum and on their RSS Feed and Twitter.
The fansite is run by a Microsoft MVP (Most Valuable Professional) and the site is an EMEA Xbox Community Network member, an IGDA Member and a Microsoft Partner.
What does that mean? It means good things for you guys.
I have the opportunity to write this as I am the resident PC News Writer and a member of the Game Review team on the site.
I am happy to inform you I will be featuring 10 screenshots in this feature. That gives 10 servers the opportunity to submit a screenshot to me to be featured. It will be a first come first served basis. The first 10 to hit my inbox only.
Each screenshot will be accompanied by a caption that gives the server name. That caption will link to the servers website.
What do you need to do, then?
Email [email protected] with your screenshot and the website address. One screenshot only please. And remember, first come first served.
Any questions, please email them across.
Good luck!
Roo Avery

I have only had 5 submissions.
I thought you guys would be jumping to have this oppurtunity….
-
I would have thought so too with all the great mods….out there. Mine is only in beta and not ready for any big adverts as for what you need. I’ve even taken down my server info because of the trouble with editing the information concerning it. I’ll just re-submit it later.
I’ve been viewing the site often and will continue to do so.
HK
I would like to add, I noticed one of your sigs as the “Fixer” kind of caught me a little strangely. It was a name I used a long time ago when I first started online gaming. I didn’t know how to create signatures back then and had never seen it used before then either and since until now.

Hi guys,
Just a quick update for you all.
I have had 6 Screenshots submitted to date from the following servers;
Shattered Worlds
WTS World
24/7 Procyon
Galacticum Mod
Discovery RP
88 FlakI am going to leave submissions open until 6pm GMT+0 today, thats Monday 28th September 2009. That leaves another 7 hours and 40 minutes.
There are some big server names missing from the list and only 4 places left. If you want to get mentioned in this article, you need to act now. It is still first come first server for fairness.
Regards,
Roo.

And a friendly advice to all: PR is the key to nice player numbers. For what do you have the greatest server if nobody knows about it?

Well thats it, I cant accept anymore as I need to work on finishing the feature now.
Thanks to the following servers;
Shattered Worlds
WTS World
24/7 Procyon
Galacticum Mod
Discovery RP
88 Flak
Topfreelancers (Orion submitted on behalf of Mike)
MUfor thier Screenshots.
To be honest guys, I was really disappointed with the response to this (apart from the above). Every month there is another save freelancer attempt that is left by the wayside very quickly. But as soon as a real opportunity to get some coverage comes up, everyone goes quiet. Maybe you arent that bothered after all? That’s the only reason I can think of. After all… enough people read this thread.
Thanks to the Starport for allowing me to use the site for this. Please feel free to close this thread now.
Kind Regards (as always)
Roo.

Well, I think it’s more an issue of everyone being busy, and not lack of interest. Although I periodically check the Starport, I was away most of the weekend, and might have missed this if not for M0tah giving me a heads up on IM.
I will admit though that it is annoying to see most “save freelancer” attempts get broadsided by community politics (“why does this mod get coverage blah blah blah?”). It’s pretty clear at this point that mods are the biggest saving grace of Freelancer, and to many players why the game continues to be enjoyable after so many years - which is why I like your simple “first come, first serve” approach, as that pretty much subverts all that crap.
I’ll poke some of the devs on my IM list that aren’t already featured here, and see if they’re interested.
-
My apologies, Roo, I haven’t had a lot of time to check any forums as I’ve been busy with school (I’m currently training in the hospitals; 12 hr work days + studying). I think FF has contacted you for FW:ToW and has given you our screen shot. I hope you will be able to include it in your article.
Thanks for the opportunity and I’m sorry I didn’t contact you sooner.

Shouldn’t Vanilla Freelancer Servers be included as well? There are many out there that have great RP that are not modded. No favoritism should just be given only to modded servers. It was the Vanilla servers that impressed many to make the additions for the game in the first place.
Equal Opportunity here. Correct?
-
Equal oppurtunity yes… if you got your screenshots submitted. Same as the first come first served rule. As I was restricted in numbers, I had to do it that way for fairness.
@Sushi - Yes FF sent me an email just after I posted. As I had space for one more, I will include yours. So no worries at all.
Due to a busy weekend, this will hopefully be completed this weekend, more than likely on Sunday. Check my Blog or Twitter account (@XBLA_RooAvery) for updates on when it is released.
As a side note I got my Promo copy of Risen for the Xbox yesterday and started playing it last night. And its an awesome game. There will able be a review of that going up very soon. 8-)

First come first serve i think is the best way to do all save freelancer posts like this one. If you dont get in quick enough you miss out but you cant complain because everyone was given the oppurtunity to submit something to it.
I was lucky to get MU’s ss in as i was on holiday all of last week and it was only by chance i checked the forum and saw the post about it.

@HK: And nobody said vanilla servers couldn’t submit screenshots as far as I’m aware. If they didn’t, tough luck to them.
@Roo: Good to hear

Much love.

As stated, equal opportunity was given - Procyon, which made the list (apparently with time to spare, no less) is vanilla through and through.
Given the fact that vanilla gameplay is at this stage often overlooked in favor of modded gameplay (for some reasons that I agree with to a certain extent, and others that I disagree with very strongly), I’d like to thank Roo for helping to give us the chance to get our name out in ways that probably would not have otherwise been possible.

It just seemed like a very short noticed and that many may not of had the time to see the ad. You’re right though, tough luck for them.
I would have offered my server with it’s new mod under construction but, I see it like this, I join forums all the time and leave my forum web url but, even though I show courtesy enough to join those forums and view their forum and register to learn more about them, and can see how many visit my profile, I don’t get the same respect from them to view my forum of which you have to register to do so. I don’t make any difference to me. I’m not a beggar of members so my forum looks the most busiest out there. I’ve deleted over 500 as is.Some of us could use help from more advanced people as yourselves but, why should I send all my members away to just hang out here or there and not return? I do the searching and return with answers I’ve learned from those who have them.
I don’t have the FLCN bar but I have the server rings on some that are still using html but on those that don’t, links are provide in my portal.
I’m just tiered of being given the run around when I’ve been dealing with servers and cheaters and other issues as long and many of you have and much longer than those that are here now.
Glad that Roo has been given the change to excel in something he’s always wanted to do and hopes that it bring him great fortune in the long run.
-
HK, it isn’t about respect. You’re hosting a server site; if I’m already playing somewhere, what exactly would I do by going to your site? Modding questions are best answered here so that they help everyone in the process, and I don’t have anything else I can think of that I could do on your site.
If you don’t want to show people other sites, it’s your go, even though I disagree with the idea very strongly. You’re just painting things as if, by showing them other sites, they’ll all leave your server. Are you so afraid that others can offer better value? I doubt it. Well then, why not show them what’s out there? If you are confident in your server and mod (And I hope everyone, be it you or me or anyone else, is), people will most probably keep hanging around, but they’ll be even more faithful to you as they will have seen what’s out there and will still prefer what you offer. If you hide what exists, you only end up clustering the community even more for no reason.

(Don’t take it personally, it’s my opinion and has nothing to do with you in particular)

Thank you for the kind comments. Much appreciated.
I put the feature on hold whilst TSP was down. As TSP does feature in the article, I wanted it to be up before work continued.
Now things seem a little more stable, I will once again begin work on it.
Thanks.
