Protected bonus forums area?

Huhu,
as we already posted in the admin’s anomaly app thread, what about a protected area at which non-admin’s can have access to? -

What about a forums area for “Trusted users/developes”, anyways? This is maybe a good idea.
But on the other hand, i think some people walk long enough round in the Freelancer world, and the most good people we do know.
Regardless if they have a server running or not, it’s not a good deal to let them out.Maybe look who help the community a lot.
Some people don’t have a server runnig for the moment, but they have a lot of experience they can share with server ops for the moment. And that’s gonne now.If it’s a desiccion from the guys “only let in server owners” i’ll respect that it’s their choise.
But think about what Bas tells than. Maybe that could be usefull for some people to.
Special for people who don’t have a lot experience with running a server or more. And Xarian?

Bas… Im 100% with Bas…I have no server… probably never will (location… location)
So… Is there a hope of any re-think of who’s allowed in?
I mean… really… anyone can grab a mod… start a server… and get access after set time… (yes not anyone can keep it “running” but that’s not the point…)What about us who actually code the mod?? I dont really see it as fair that we get treated “below” a server owner… without us You’d all be still playing Vannilla
Held my tounge on this one long enough… sick of seeing ppl ive never seen b4 get access… and I have no hope… :?
BTW… this message was written in the best of intentions… no malice/angry intended… I just think its “weird” how it works is all…

Me probably…& my point is basically… at moment im in the total dark about things i may have to do latter to stabilize an XLR server… also It would be a good thing to know who “NOT” to let into my server when it goes live…
I also have a pretty good knowledge of Hook & Shell workings and implementation… more than 1 Admin can vouch for me there… so all that info ye think may be irrelevant to me as a modder is in fact exactly what i need to both protect my mod and maybe even help more… (alot of the time i don’t answer a thread because its in public and certain info is still “taboo” )
And im pretty shure im not alone in any of the above… Im not saying let any or every modder in… even me (lolz) just the ones that can prove they need info… and are “legit” modders with an actual mod nearing release.

FF, You know some action of moding is very similar to cheating, so, in my opinion, something better to keep it as secret. <– My personal perspectiveSo, private area for modder is needed
For instance, there could be polls before “dangerously” exe hacks get released. Some specific modding discussions, or for ppl to get some feedback before they release their software to the public (for instance, Adoxa - No offense intended, but you migh remember some discussions which could have been done before the software got released)

Seems like the beginnings of a two tier forum if it all goes down this road. Something along the lines of we are all equal or some will be more equal than others.
Best imho to leave it as it is. Out in the open so we can ALL see what’s going on. The moment you start hiding stuff, people want to know about it and get all secretive. Very bad idea imo.
-
Well, iirc there was someone saying about the adoxa-critism: It isn’t adoxa’s fault because he doesn’t have any protected area where he can introduce his stuff before releasing.
-
I think we should all gather on our future flash chat (hint for admins), drink a few beers each, shoot someone and call it a day …… what do you say ??
On-topic, if you really want a private area, then create one … just don’t forget about the rest of us and keep posting in the topics that we “can” read. Other than that, I’m cool with it … in some way. -
Security through obscurity is no security. That something is hidden only means those who do not know about it will not be able to react properly to it. It serves no purpose.
The server admin area is mainly used for server administration and cheater discussion. Server admins usually prefer not declaring to the world they’ve been hacked or attacked, nor do they want to give ideas on how to do such things. This is why the section exists.
Modding knowledge should never be kept locked up. That people disliked adoxa’s discoveries doesn’t mean they should be hidden. You can’t find solutions if you don’t know the problem exists. Ignoring the problem won’t make it go away.
So again, for one more time, there will not be a private section for “senior” or for “special” or for “haxxor” people. I think the point’s been covered a billion times already.
-
I fully agree with FF.
Sections for really sensitive stuff already exist and are granted on request/invitation (for example client hooking code or anticheat stuff).
You could argue that adoxa’s code is already too sensitive, but most of it you simply dont understand from looking at his code, and if you do, you likely know your way around manipulating the client.
-
Ironically however the single piece of code from adoxa that caused the largest uproar was about the strafing hack which has been around since forever…
-
I read the first post so i gunna go out on a whim and think that the subsequent posts said something along the lines of… no.
agrees
-
iirc the discussion was about a feature from FLHack. Was it something to connect to each server even with a different FL version or so?
-
-
Lets just then… agree to disagree 8-) lol
BUT!.. the next time a groundbreaking feature is released in public… and it may or may not have what can be considered a cheat/hack…
Remember this thread… as i feel Bas is only trying to avoid the “same old same old” that happens every time…
I agree with BOTH sides here… it don’t feel right having a “upstairs/downstairs” approach to such sensitive data, split forums and all… but i also don’t want to miss out on what may be “well known” info or new additions to cheat protection… and as it stands now… without a running server to admin… I’ll never know.
Catch 22…

**I have been watching this thread since it was posted. In my opinion adding another level can be a problem. As it is there is currently a division between to 2 sides, those of us building and running servers and those simply playing the game.
I know many of the software developers only post here but for nearly a month I have had a forum just for you. So far only 1 person has even been given access to it but hasn’t even posted. If you want a private testing area for your software, simply sign up for the FL Coders forum on my website.
I’m not trying to pull you away from here, just trying to give you a place to pre-test your software before you release it to the public and get feedback on it, good or bad…
This forum is for coders only, if server admins want access to it I must be able to verify that you actual handle the running of the server-side stuff. It deals with cheat protection as well, private FL hacks etc and could use your input.
Anyways, this is an option for you guys to consider, I would prefer that we not split the ranks here anymore than it already is, as I see it, it is a pretty good layout as it stands, just my opinion.**

IMHO, there’s already a “Private” section here and some things should be discussed and processed through it before making them public. That’s what it was intended for in the first place, in part. Many things have been already been posted on the “General” forums that should be previewed by SOp’s and Admins prior to a general posting in order to keep their viewpoints as they should be, between Server Ops and Admins.
If someone from the public wants this info, they can follow the rules to gain access just like the ones of us that have it now. Run a server, have it up for a while along with a forum and so forth then apply for that access.
I know I’m no modder and not that I don’t want to be because I keep trying. But, I do run a server and have been for a long time even though it’s not as active or up as often these days I still value the information by having that access and that’s why I applied for it.
Let others do the same.
