Thanks for the link, it looks like a great site for newbies, just the thing to recommend when people ask for help setting up. They have all the main must-haves, but since they target new PCs and re-installs, I’d also recommend this first:
However, for more advanced users, nothing beats Major Geeks, it’s my home.
Check out the ‘Top Freeware Picks’ under INFO on the right.Their forums are the place to goto if you find your PC infected, lots of free help available:

Here’s my little spanner in your works…
Whenever something is free and there is a downloadable proggie to make life easy for you, but there is no visible way for the site to be making money…
It ISN’T free!
You Will be generating revenue for them somehow, whether you like it or not!
Not my cup of tea, I can get the free stuff from the sites where the writer has stored it and be safer knowing there is no little trojan using my machine for sending mass emails in my email name while I’m blissfully unaware of what it is doing.
Watch your cpu light when you have let the machine rest for a couple of minutes, and some of you will find it’s still busy flashing away while you’re on the net, not waiting for you to work but working for its new master!

I think TSP has finally reached maturity!
We all know that a forum isn’t really one without its own resident conspiracy theorist
Seriously, if a site like this had spyware (and I believe that thing’s been around for a long while), it would’ve got out by now.

You want conspiracy theorists?
Go look at Discovery GC’s flood. >_>
EDIT: http://discoverygc.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=63669 -
http://www.thefreecountry.com/ is also a good site to find freeware and open source programs.

Why of course! However it’s not from trojans, didn’t you notice this at the bottom?
- Toolbar Included.
That’s how revenue is generated. Toolbars. Lots of those programs have them, just don’t DL the ones with the asterisks, they don’t try to hide this.
Hint: Almost all those programs with toolbars let you choose not to install them, and many have versions without toolbars at all. Even if the toolbar is installed and it isn’t what you want, you can often uninstall the toolbar later, without uninstalling the freeware. It’s fair.
