Where IS everyone?
-
Well, you know - it’s just propaganda figures!
Heheheh.
Yeah, why is Disco so popular? Guess it’s probably easy to make lots of money?
-
EASY? Hah. It takes ya a month just to get money for a BS, if you’re lucky enough not to have a life.
Honestly, I’m stumped on why ALL of the disco servers are popular. I don’t get it, if the main server ain’t full, why don’t they go ove there and make everyone happy?
-
i think it is one of those great mystery’s, although discovery was the first mod i played, i think it is very exposed and was the first one that can up by a Google search. I think another thing that keeps it popular is that it is an expansion of Freelancer and those people going back to the game find it nice that they can still play in familiar systems that they remember rather than having to hit the ground running and understand a whole new universe.
Just my 2 cents.

I think Disco became so popular because, it was the more or less one of the very few mods that was Server Ready for everyone to create their own server for ease of play. Unlike many that keep their mods to themselves and didn’t want any competition in running one like the 1.0 servers do. They can also play it and enjoy it and not have to be pushed into any sort of RP when all they want to do is enjoy it with their friends and have fun. Not as crowded and easier to maintain as well.
As for myself, I run a Disco server for 4 years starting with the v4.80, I think it was, and up until the v4.85 come out. My Disco v4.84 Server was hacked and I moved then, just worked on my own mod for a while. Of which I’m still working on.
The Berlin Discovery Server is mainly a German Server and players there don’t have to worry about speaking English and can enjoy it in their own way as compared to having to resort to chatting in English all the time. Makes their RP easier for them. One good thing about this server is, it’s up 24/7/365 without crashes or shut downs all the time. I’ve played there as well and it’s a good server.
Disco USA in my opinion, is just a copycat of the main server for overflow and ones that were kicked and/or banned from the main server. Dom was new at running a server even though she’s been an Admin for quite sometime and I guess she felt that some needed a second chance. I’ve played on it and know the antics of many of the players that moved over to it. Some of the Server Admins are from the Main Server as well so, that speaks for itself.
I left them all for personal reasons, however, I was more or less dedicated to the Main Disco Server for better than 2 years (while running my own server) and even before the RP Server, they were running only a PvP Server of which was fun while it lasted. It was changed to be the Test Server for the newer releases so as not to have to shut the RP server down just to beta test on. Correct me if I’m wrong but, I think that is the reason. Besides, most everyone moved over to the RP server and the PvP server became less populated. Now, The PvP Server, no linger exist.
As for making money? Yes, if you’re familiar with Disco and have been over the years, it’s ease of use and trading, you can make lots of money real fast. Well, if you can get by all the pirating that goes on, on it. 8-)
One of the other reasons the Main Disco & USA Server is so popular, you can join multiple factions and betray your friends in the other factions you belong to. Many servers do not allow this. No dedication to your teammates.
On another note; none of the other server got attacked as much as the Disco servers to.
I’m sure that there would be many more server mods running if the creators would allow their mods to be run server side. I think that that’s one reason others steal mods and with all the outward assistance of info, (like some posted here) they learn how to change version numbers, modify it a little and change the names so they can play it to their liking without having to follow someone else rules and/or RP and have fun among themselves.
Well, that’s a small attribute from me as to my opinion for the Disco Servers. Others may not agree or not have been on them since the beginning for them to know but, I think that is some of the reasons Disco is so popular and why many don’t jump on the main server just to keep it full.

lemme post my 2 cents, too, i suppose, the discovery is so popular, because its creators are simply aces in modeling and aleing. i mean, we know, the mod is huge and expands the universe in an insane way but call me a second mod, that keeps the image of freelancer, the freelancer atmosphere just as it is in vanilla (i am talking about the ships stored in discovery folder and gallia). most mods, like e.g. crossfire do also do a great professional work, but they get also far away from traditional freelancer with starlancer ship packs, custom ships and ships from favorite scifi-shows, whereas discovery, at least current version, does keep the traditional image, visual on the textures and new texture styles, visual on the effects, that show peace, beauty and mystery, just like vanilla. i think it is the visual aspect, might be even this one only. i got very impressed by what great the additions fit in the vanilla ambience.
-
I beg to differ. You can say a lot of things about Discovery (great server-side additions, great team, large scale), but the graphics are on par with most mods out there. If you haven’t checked out Freeworlds 2.0, 88 flak, Itano Circus or SWWT, you might want to as they have equal or better visual flair

Disco is popular by its rp, all diablo 2 fans knows about it

You sir win the award for the most-edited flamebait posted here. I’ll ask others not to take the bait and to keep the heat level low or we’ll have to intervene. I don’t want bickering over a legitimate question.

I’ve excessively used the edit button… Must keep away from that in future - not used to those edit lines popping up when I edit one of my posts. :
Again, sorry about that. -
Just always think about how people will react when you post. Lines like “You all fail.” should be clear indicators that you’re treading a fine line, eve if you haven’t said that yourself

Hopefully i’m not taking the bait here as i’d like to return to the original topic. I will say this, some servers thrive on RP and if that’s your bag then you are well catered for.
If RP is not your thing, then you are also well catered for. Doesn’t mean one style is more popular than the other. I’ve said before without mentioning names, communities are built up over a period of time which is part of the reason certain mods are successful.
Also let’s add that no one mod is better than the other. Most of the larger mods i can safely say are very good. Each one has its draws and is unique to its own community that helped spawn it. It’s not always about content. The server admins play a huge part here as well. Better to goto a well maintained server with friendly staff than a server run by idiots. Could have the ‘best’ mod running on it but if the staff are fools, then people won’t visit.
The other factor that amuses me is actually about Freelancer itself. Some of you probably know i’m not a huge fan of RP for this simple reason, at least in the FL universe, FL was designed with a do as you want, go anywhere attitude. The first words on the back of the box are these, “Decide your fate, one job at a time” and i let my players do the same.

He was just quoting Loyd, I believe?
Just a general comment, not about Disco but about players:
As it happens RolePlay does make the game more interesting (consensus), where a pirate talks and behaves like a pirate, or a police character or bounty hunter does that too and so on.
The problem is many players like to have 5 characters (per account) with different names but all behaving exactly the same way. Many have the same ship for more than one character.
Or maybe it’s just that others enjoy real RP too much and get into character far too deeply. There is an added thrill when a Kusari character talks in broken English with a strong Kusari accent, or a pirate character bawls threats of doom at you beforehand, instead of just shooting you to pieces. Anyone can shoot another player to pieces if he has a more powerful ship/loadout, or shoots without warning, and that becomes a drag. In fact that is harassment, and on many servers that is what players want.
I don’t think there is much regard to the modders’ work, what ship looks good, only how fast you can get the most powerful ship, how much damage it can do with what big bad weapons mounted. I have not seen many players with finesse about them during my 5-6 years playing FL.
This is why the RRJDS Guild came into existence (heavy unashamed plug!). But our numbers are dwindling, shoot-em-up is what the majority wants.
So in our mod you start off with a shuttle, some passengers, and two weak weapons. Then you can get a “bus”, and then a “super-liner”, both without weapons.
It’s no surprise how many get a freighter or gunship as soon as they can instead, and then a dreadnought to be invincible. And we had a lot of complaints from players who did not stay, that the dreadnoughts don’t turn as fast as fighters do! Hah.

when i mentioned graphics, i did not only mean the very fx we see in discovery. i meant more the models and textures, that mostly fits in great in the vanilla ambience and hell, i love it look like vanilla, rly. ofc if fx are concerned, there are better mods, surely first ones globally 88flak and itano circus. but both of these are not freelancer anymore. they redo the gameplay in a great way, in a really amazing way but still they redo gameplay whereas discovery tries to enlarge the possibilities. also there are mods that do simply add their favorites or replace vanilla with them, redo the gameplay without any balance in an ugly way but therefore have beautiful ships, sometimes or effects. lets stay quiet on what could be meant with that, most of us know what kinda mod i mean. btw i prefer 88flak rather than discovery.
however, though graphics might be not the greatest at all, discovery just keeps them vanilla adding lots of new, but still lookin like vanilla. not that you get me wrong on that, vanilla is not the best but tradition is worth a lot. -
You do realize that you just could have decided NOT to quote him? By doing so, you inherently endorse whatever he had to say in the very way he said it.
In other words, you’re as much to blame as he is. If he posted it himself, he would’ve had the entire blame, but you posted it for him, so you get some too.
Now please let this matter die off and come back to the topic at hand.

Ahem so can someone answer the question about WHERE THE HELL IS EVERYONE? I mean the numbers on the site really don’t add up at all. Look at it. http://www.flserver.de/
Peak of 700 players. Also why is it disco numbers seems to have taken a sudden dip?
