FLserver

Hello all.
I apologize if this is elsewhere already, but I didn’t see it.
I am a newbie modder attempting to test a new ship on my own server. I based my server off of a mod I play on so that I could push to have my own ships added possibly.
I built the ship based on DRZZT’s ship tutorial, with a few changes here and there.
Here’s the story i guess. I activated the mod on my normal directory, then copied that directory to another location. I made the changes to this new directory, and when I was done, I copied that directory to another computer. On that computer, I run FLserver (after a version number change) and it boots up fine. On my first computer, I run FL out of that directory (so both computers are using the same) and it loads to the main menu. Here’s where things stop. I click on MP, LAN, and I can see my server, and I can select my server, but when I click connect, I get a box that says it’s taking longer than expected, and then it says it couldn’t connect. At least it didn’t crash.
I have the firewalls disabled on both computers, and I went ahead and installed the 1.1 patch.
Please let me know if there is something else I can do.
I tried to attach the relevant files to the changes, but for some reason I wasn’t allowed.
Thanks and have a good day/night!

Have you disabled IPv6 on both machines? You need to do that.
If you are running Windows 7 you may have Microsoft Security Essentials running - stop it.
The other thing is Antivirus software - disable yours temporarily to see.
And normally if you have a firewall, or router, MS DirectPlay8 Server must be allowed by putting it in the firewall Exceptions list.
Let us know the fix if you find it, so others can be helped?

I’m running vista on both computers. Both computers also have MSE installed and running, but I just installed these and havn’t figured out how to “safely” stop the program.
I will disable IPV6 if it’s not already done so, and I’ll have to figure out the exception. What’s funny is, I was on the server when the files I had on my computer and the files I had on the server computer didn’t match. As soon as I fixed the missing files, it stopped working. I’m not exactly sure if that is a coincidence or not, but I needed the server to run the same files as the client, so I could test my new ship model.
I’ll get back, thanks.

I know I’m new here, but your a friggin genious. Turns out, it was just the IPV6 that needed disabled. I didn’t even do the other stuff. Thank you very much

Glad to help, my friend, but it’s not me, others found that particular problem through sweat and long frustrations!
I found the DirectPlay8 Server not being passed problem (or at least re-discovered it, because nobody was able to help me with finding that one), it took me almost a week of every day farting around.
This is why it’s so important to tell others what are the fixes we find.
It’s sad that almighty Microsoft couldn’t work out IPv6 completely, isn’t it? This is why I never trust them with new developments, and refuse to use them in favour of the old, known and trusted. The latest Office 2007 for example, still has the table and other bugs that were in Office '97 - that’s what - er - 10 years ago at least?
I rest my case, m’lud!
Glad you’re up and running - now as a favour go and try our mod and report back, it’s very quiet on our server! - www.rrjds.com

Unfortunatly, my problem seems to have evolved…
I was able to create a char on my server, that char would show up in the accounts on server, then as soon as I undock, both freelancer and FLServer freeze up. I’ve never had a program lock up two computers before
Any ideas? or is this one possibly a file issue with my ship addition?

I think so.
Do this:
1. Rename your modded Freelancer game folder to ModFreelancer on both machines.
2. Rename your My Documents\My Games\Freelancer folder to ModFreelancer.
3. Copy vanilla Freelancer to both machines and rename the folder as Freelancer.
Run it and see if it works.
To go back to the mod just rename your Freelancer folders to PlainFreelancer and ModFreelancer to Freelancer.
If you are good at writing small batch files you can make one in a minute to do that for you and the reverse too.

Being that I created a whole new directory on both computers, I think it will be as simple as disabling the mods and trying that way.
Thank you, will check back in a min.

so… um, yeah. on vanilla, It was a tad bit slow, but I made it out of the starting planet, and flew around for a while with little trouble.
I’m starting to think it’s a file issue and I’ve gone and screwed up the INI files for loaded my ship.
If you have an email or something, I have all the files in a zip file I could send you. I guess its too big for this forum to accept.
