Help for a total noob.
-
Ok, so the other day I was at my buddy’s place and he showed me this game Freelancer. I played it for a while (totally into it) when all of a sudden (like three hours later :P) It was time for me to leave. I said ok, whatever. Now that a few days have passed I find myself wanting to play it more and more. Problem is, I have no idea how to go about finding it. I’ve checked around teh interwebz for a while, but to no avail. I understand that Microsoft has closed down the servers and all that, but I can’t find the game itself. Let alone getting online. So I found this site and figured it’d be the best place to continue my quest for Freelancer. So what I need from you guys is a total noob friendly step-by-step guide on how to get this game and get it online.
Thanks

Welcome, Brad.
Here’s a brand new one: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FREELANCER-Space-Trading-Simulation-Brand-New-/190343208912?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_PC_Video_Games_Video_Games_JS&hash=item2c5156dfd0
You’ve got 15 days left, its price is £12 including free postage.
You will need to find, download and install the GLS Workaround Patch (Global Server Workaround v1.0) - the game needs a Global List Server (‘GLS’ server) to help client pc’s to connect to multiplayer servers, this is a server that holds a list of all online servers as they log in to it. The clients look up the list and display it for the player to select the one he wants to connect to. The original GLS server was stopped by Microsoft some time ago, but we have a couple of geeky nerds hiding here somewhere who set up their own one for us so we can continue playing until we or they retire or drop!
The patch enables the client PC’s (players’ PCs) to find the GLS Server.
I won’t give you the link to it, because I think you need to get to know your way around a bit by yourself.
You will also need to find, download and install FLMM (FreeLancer Mod Manager) to activate any of the mods you want to try. I still use FLMM v1.31, the later v1.4 had bugs and I don’t know for sure if they have been fixed.
There are many mods, including ours - RRJDS 2.82 - (the best of course - lol ) - www.rrjds.com.
You may want to try to finish the solo game of plain FL first but it’s up to you of course.
When you’re ready to try Multiplayer, you should see the list of online servers - choose one that’s compatible (the others will not be selectable). Remember that most servers will not permit combat in the New York system, so don’t come out blasting at everyone or you could be kicked off or banned even!
Take it step by step - read some of the posts on this forum to become more knowledgeable, find the bits and pieces you need, then try, and ask if you have problems.
Good luck.

You can get Freelnacer for even less here:
http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/games/pid/7376420/a/Freelancer.htmBut I don’t know about the shipping costs…
If you want to continue your journey you can copy the freelancer savegames from your friend’s PC. It is located in my documents\my games\Freelancer
As Startrader stated out the MP scene is still active. Feel free to ask any questions you have left.
my site with it’s problem solutions FAQ might be worth a look as well: www.freelancerpatch.com

There is also a way to “hack” the demo version, creating an open SP, but you want the storyline as I understand, so you have to buy…
If you didn’t end it, some amazing stuff are waiting for you to discover theme!
You should download the HD mod to make the game better. Follow the link:

Or this one if the first doesnt work:

Concerning how to buy Freelancer, please update this Wiki page with any sources on where and how to buy Freelancer:

Might do that later (don’t want to promise anything) - Wodka, what about if T SP becomes a partner of those stores to get a bit more money for the T SP project?
-
Well, even if you couldn’t find information about partnership programs at the other websites it might be worth to e-mail them to get more information about it…maybe they still do it.
I think I might also add the current prices at the wikipage for each source if possible.
