Server Offer - Mod Hosting On Offer!
-
Guys, here is what I think is a unique offer.
We have a server and our mod (RRJDS 2.82 - The Prophecy) is not popular, our player numbers are too low to sustain the mod.
So here is an offer to any energetic group which has a good and stable mod that they would like us to host for an initial period of 3 months.
Criteria:
1. Stable mod, no crashers please, because the FLServer may not restart until we can intervene and this could be days.
2. Minimum following of 10 players initially who will use the server and mod consistently. We will want to see minimum growth to 30 regular players (not characters) within a month.
3. Responsible admins (4-5) to manage the server as much as possible during 24-hour use.
4. Use of in-game FLServer.exe control (restart, player file management if this is possible) by admins because we will not have any-time admin access to the server.
5. Commitment by the mod admins to enforce gameplay by all users of the server in accordance with our Guild’s Three Pillars of Virtue:- Fairness, Sportsmanship, and Honour at all times, and to treat all others in the light of these Virtues.Let us have your applications please on www.rrjds.com/forum - General Announcements and News - MOD HOSTING OFFER
You need to register and start your own topic in our General Announcements and News category.
Tell us:
1. Your mod name
2. Main 2 admins’ names and contacts
3. If the mod is not yours, please confirm that you have permission from the authors - we don’t want to upset people anywhere
4. How you see your management of the mod will attract players, e.g. RolePlay, events, server wars, your other plans to keep player interest and grow player numbers
5. Your commitment to enforce gameplay in accordance with our Three Pillars of Virtue at all times. We will keep applications open for 1 week from now initially. If there are too few we may extend before making a decision.
The RRJDS Guild Members will discuss the options and give a preference one week after the application time ends.
We will then approach the contenders to discuss and finally choose one group and mod.
The minimum trial period will be 3 months, after which we will assess player numbers and mod popularity and other factors before extending the hosting period or selecting another mod and group.
If you have any concerns please let us know on the forums at the time of application.
We will set up a forum for the group that is successful.
The RRJDS Guild members will play on the server under our Guild tags [RRJDS], [RRJDS-E] and will retain judicial control in case of any conflict between players and the mod admin group.
Thank you and good contest to all applicants

Is it really true, that nobody here has any interest in having their beloved mod hosted on a Free Commercial Server?
OK, at least let me have some comment, even like - “Who needs ya ST?”
Don’t like any of the conditions? Tell me!

Maybe the most already have a server?
And patience, you posted your offer yesterday. Maybe not many people read it for the moment.

Stable mod: that’s hard for most, there will be crashes and often quite frequently. Why the hell aren’t you using an automatic restart application?
-
Minimum following: the mods that have a following likely also have a server, it’s those that do not have anything but the mod that need the server.
-
No direct access to server: that severely restricts possibilities right there, as you suddenly can’t fix bugs, alter configuration, update plugins, alter characters, etc.
I don’t want to downplay your offer here but if I was looking for a server I’m afraid I’d just pass because I probably would not be able to work into the restrictions you’ve put in place.

I’ve actually been meaning to comment on this, but have just been busy as of late.
There has been a lot of talk over the past few months within the 88 Flak community of possibly getting a new server. Since your offer is free, we are definitely interested.
Flak’s community is in a unique position of having a fairly stable - if small - following, but a crappy server. As one member put it,

Before that even, when we did have a fast server for a brief time, players online skyrocketed, and it wasn’t uncommon to see 9-12 players on (4-6 now) with lows of around 2-4 during non-peak time (0 now)I suppose my initial questions would be with the points FriendlyFire made - what kind of server software is being run? Most support automatic restart and maintenance cycles (a must), and while Flak is pretty stable, there is at least one known crash related to Flak’s FLHook that we’re working on, and as FF put it crashes are just a part of Freelancer. However, it’s worth noting that before the known FLHook issue, the server (with 4-6 players average) would run for months (with 12 hour maintenance cycles) before reporting a crash of any sort, and is regularly and thoroughly tested for crashes (stability is highest development priority).
Second, while Flak has at least 10 or so dedicated players, I think the expectation of growing to 30 is a bit high without some major advertising pushes - and even that’s a stretch. Don’t get me wrong, if we got 30 people playing Flak on this server, that’d be awesome, but it just seems a bit unrealistic.
Third, although direct server access isn’t really required, it’d be a huge plus for admins to do their job efficiently. Plus, if any server hotfix patches or other general updates were made, we could implement them immediately instead of passing the patch files around.
Finally, while I won’t argue with your “Three Pillars of Virtues - Fairness, Sportsmanship, and Honor” - common etiquette I’d expect anyways - I would expect that Flak’s server admin staff would have the right to enforce our established 24/7 Server Rules, viewable here: http://www.memes.no/88flak/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1699
I’ll be keeping an eye on this topic, but can also be reached via private message or IM (info in profile).

I see I am being taken too literally here…
I offered the server two days before this post (I re-posted it again yesterday).
Of course we have a restarter - Ioncross. How else can we work?
And we have FL Shell so our admins can restart FLServer too. (I think - never had to do it). And it gives us a lot of restart templates.
Some mods may not want to use Ioncross or FL Shell, then they must obviously use some other controller / restarter that works.
What I meant is that if the server itself (the machine) hangs or crashes then it will take next working day to have it restarted again. If it happens at the weekend then it will not be restarted until Monday.
So therefore it is not a good idea for proofing a new mod, right?
And yep, the group is of course going to run its own server rules, that is understood.
Our rules will override in arbitration if there is any conflict between players and the group admins, because we feel it is “sane” to do so, and because we are not relinquishing the server.
It is a good opportunity. If Flak or any others want to try it as a second server before commiting, please apply, all are welcome.
Player numbers - I was referring to growing to around 30 players, but obviously they won’t be on all the time. 5-10 average online is fine. Not hard to achieve. A friends group of only 5-6 in total is not acceptable, because the server will still be under-used, that is all.
OK?
Look forward to your applications on the forum. Any more questions please ask.

We’re pretty much ready to test 88 Flak if you are.
We have managed to get 3 FL Server sessions running simultaneously in our 1 user account, so we need to see if your mod controller (is it FLHook?) will control the 88Flak session without being fooled by another session.
Let’s get in touch?
