Just Another Newbie

Well, my story is typical. I was cleaning out my storage area and ran across this jewel. Now it’s loaded on my PC and I’m itching to play. I am in single player mode for now, but if I get back into it I may be interested in multi-player.
I do however have a question or two, the most pressing of which is what mods do you recommend and do they play well together. I’m an old time Oblivion and Fallout freak so mods were my first thought.
The first mod/utility I downloaded was FLMM, of course, and HD textures to improve the graphics a bit.
I have Discovery 485; Phoenix 1.05; WTS; and Tekagi’s Treasure. I haven’t installed any of them yet though. My primary concern is which of these work with other mods and of course are there any other recommendations?
Thank you

use the basic rule of mods here. when one is engaged and turned on if other mods are red it means you cant use them. any way all those mods you spoke of cant be used together and i dont think the mod makers would let anything else work with them. for the simple reason anybody can find an expliot or a cheat and get the higher advantage on the server they are running. the phonix mod is good the only problem is the npcs are missle happy and you only get 30 counter measures after that boom! discovery is another good mod. if you want to try a nice mod try out 88 flack or the order mod. the order mod i put together and thats a crazy fun ride if you are into killing.

Be aware that Discovery 4.85 and above disable the singleplayer storyline. I’m not aware whether Phoenix, WTS or Tekagi’s keep it. Likewise, 88flak is a much better experience in multiplayer, although you can also set your own MP server up to play by yourself or with friends.
Shattered Worlds War-Torn still has full storyline compatibility, but it’s a bit of a tougher challenge. I’m not too well-versed into single player mods, but I think you’ve already gotten a good selection of mods. The other big ones would be Freeworlds (MP only), CrossFire, Monkey Universe, New Universe and The UnderVerse. You can find them all in the Freelancer Community Network, housed as a bar at the top on all participating sites.
If you need some getting started help for a specific mod, I’d say the mod’s official site is probably where you’ll get the best information possible.

Thanks for all the information - now I have to single out which mod(s) play well in single player. A lot of the mods that I’ve found so far, plus a few of the ones you suggested, are multiplayer only so that pretty much puts them off to the side for a while. That still leaves several to sort through and that gives me choices - always a good thing.
Since the game doesn’t take very much time to reinstall if all else fails I can just whack it and reinstall the game. Hopefully though I can find a good fit for my gameplay interests, new places, better economic system, higher graphics quality, etc. without too much ado.
Thanks again!!!

I would also recommend Adoxa single-player console and JFLP, never tried them myself but they seem to feature a bunch of nice things.

JFLP = Jason’s Freelancer Patch
Uh, and FLHack from the same page.

Itano Circus might be worth a try for SP as well:
http://the-starport.net/freelancer/news/article.php?storyid=109&keywords=Itanoafaik it is made for SP only mostly, but I am nto sure about the storyline.
Many times you don’t need to re-install the game if it doesn’t work anymore. Insider tipps: Try deleting your savegames then, especially restart.fl, especially if you expire a crash right after the intro screen.
Also: Deactivate all mods, go to FLMM->restore backups, activate mods again. Sometimes you might want to restore backups 2 or 3 times in a row if a lot of files were restored.

Phoenix definately has SP compatability. I made sure that still works with the current version and from the way it’s looking, will be the same in the next version i put out
One other thing with Phoenix, is it doesn’t need any other mods added to it as the HD textures, multiplayer side of things is all included. You just load up the mod and everything works.

Thanks again folks - I created a Freelancer info doc so that I could save all of this information.
Gibbon, I downloaded v. 1.05 to install, but I understand (correctly I hope) that there is another version due out soon? I like what I see so far because I like exploring and trading with a fairly good sized dash of combat too.
One question though - will I have to start a new game when I install Phoenix and any future versions?

Most mods will have trouble playing nicely together, so yes you usually have to make a new savegame.
FLMM has the ability to automatically move the savegames so that each mod has its own set without any user interaction necessary.

No, certainly not for multiplayer. Just running through what i’ve added in my head, think you’ll be fine for singleplayer as well. It’s mostly some ships, balancing, more eye candy etc
