Have you used a download manager? We know some had problems to download it - but i guess its more likely an ISP or PC disconnect for constant streams. At least a download manager solved the problem for quite a lot (i heard nothing in opposite).
Do yu have any idea why it cancelled? The download at SWAT and MODDB are working. I tried both.

Not that it is my beer, but a solution might be to offer alternative mirrors - the file in some multilple parts. This could spare some of your players with those problems.

Is it things like your temporary folder is set to a too small capacity (honestly can’t remember if that used to be an issue only back in the day of IE and win2000 or not).
As for 1.5Gb compressed and 4Gb uncompressed - wtf takes all the space? Which folder of the mod is the biggest?

Mostly graphics (especially starspheres) and sounds. Here is an overview:
The NPCs can tell the names of most of the new bases and planets or systems (dunno how this is called - NPC voices?). That graphic displays the space for the most advanced graphics enabled. The download also contains the graphics for less good graphics cards (128 MB shared memory). A lot of different starting chracters, 4 cursor sets, 9 different particle colors sets, new intros and manny more.
Thus as we have one package that contains all that its so big. The idea to spilt it into several packages is not bad…. Gonna suggest this.
