New Laptop with a 17"screen and an ATI Mobility Radeon video adapter
-
Hey folks,
I just bought a new laptop with a 17" screen and an ATI Mobility Radeon video adapter.
I’m not anywhere near installing FL on it, but I will get to that eventually, hopefully today. So, what will I need to get FL running on it? I do have some vague memory there were some issues with Radeon video adapters…
Bullwinkle was so kind to give me advice, and mentioned a part of Jason’s FL patch… (but we talked about a lot of different types of laptops, so I’m not sure that advice was for this type of laptop / video adapter.) I also believe Louva-Deus recently updated the hardware patch. But I prefer to have the proper solution without bothering, trying etc. as I will be having quite a job with it already.
Thanks in advance!
Oh, btw I’m not really interested to hear what a bad choice I made etc. But feel free to point that out if you must.

The most likely problems will be with ativirus software, Microsoft Security essentials and IPv6 need to be disabled.
And to enable your firewall to give an alert when it blocks a program, and when it does that for Freelancer.exe and FLServer.exe to ensure you click “always allow” for both of them.
And to ensure that Micrsoft DirectPlay8 Server is also allowed in the firewall Exceptions list.
And of course the ACU (is that what is is called, I can’t remember and I don’t have Windows 7) permission to run the program.
You know all the solutions for those so it should not give you too much hassle.
If your card is not recognised it may still allow you to run the game.
If not then here is how you might be able to add your card:-

http://forums.seriouszone.com/showthread.php?59981Hey ST!
Thanks for all the advice! What about the JFLP? Well I’ll do a Google search for this forum)
Disabling IPv6 is only necesary when I want to play online and want an overview of available servers, am I right?
And “permission to run the program” in Win7???
Well, like you say, most things will be sorted out easily.

Yes when you try to run any program in Vista and Windows 7 you have to accept a confirmation message first - pain the arse when you have to do it every time for every program. I’ve seen somewhere that it can be bypassed but I’m sticking to XP as long as possible.
And yes IPv6 is going to harass your online/LAN multiplayer playing but not SP.
JFLP puts in a lot of fixes and enables widescreen resolutions.
I’ve not looked into it carefully and I’ve not yet used it because I don’t have a widescreen monitor and my mod is built on SDK1.3 plus a lot of my own fixes.

You don’t have to accept the UAC* message every time, just when you install it, and the first time you run it. This is purely for protection against viruses doing unwanted things to your system. Alternatively, you vould always just disable UAC.
Correct, IPv6 doesn’t work with FL, so you’ll need to turn that off too.
To be honest, it’s not as hard as it sounds. I’ve done several FL installs on Windows 7 systems, and it took me all of 3 minutes to get it working.
Another note - If you’re going to be using FLMM, you need to run it as administrator (Right click > Run As Administrator).

Some notes:
-Microsoft Security Essentials does not cause problems for FL
-IPv6 does cause problems. http://the-starport.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=3764&forum=6&post_id=39460#forumpost39460 should fully disable it on Windows 7.
-UAC elevation is required to let FL run properly - you can turn off UAC - http://www.petri.co.il/disable-uac-in-windows-7.htm or http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm
-As for your video card, try running FL and tell us if you get any errors. -
Wow, thx for the feedback folks!!! Will be sorting thru it all in the next few hours / days.
If I get it working, I’ll be in for a trip!

What’s the downside of turning IPv6 off? For other programs I mean? Is it really difficult to turn it on and/or off? Maybe I could just change it every time, depending on what I’ll be doing…
-
UAC - That’s just the “do you want to run this is an admin” popup, right? No more than an initial harassment (and nothing compared to run Comodo Firewall in ‘safe mode’ )

I will!

Fully turning IPv6 on and off requires a registry change and a reboot, so you probably won’t want to do that all the time.
However, IPv6 basically changes nothing for now since it’s barely in use. You might need it in the coming years, but for now it’s safe to disable. The closest I’ve heard to an issue with that would be Yahoo, which will be trying out an IPv6-only infrastructure in about a year.

Thanks for setting that straight, FF!
Btw got the game working, using Jason’s jflpac.dll. Bullwinkle kindly suggested that.
Technically it’s fine - nothing is falling off screen etc.
But it’s not really wide screen: there are black areas left and right, so I’m having a normal screen ration where the missing parts are just black.
Maybe that’s just the way it is… This is of course much better than seeing your desktop instead of the black areas, or with a quarter of your screen felling off, but I had expected it to be fullscreen & widescreen. So please let me know whether that can be achieved (and if, how).
No real hurry though as I’m about to go to sleep now
Thanks in advance folks!
EDIT added real resolution to PerfOptions (BW reminded me to do this). It’s full widescreen now, but I’m missing small borders above and below.

Got ot working, alright!!! Beautiful
Now I’m gonna read the page =Alex= linked to.
