Idea for an Armada II mod
-
Earlier today when I was playing Star Trek: Armada II (a space-based RTS), I got an idea for an A2 mod based on Freelancer. After that, I had a look through the game’s files and I was astounded by how easy it would be to mod them. Heck, opening them with Notepad, I can even see annotations that tell you HOW to mod them.
Later on, I had a look at A2’s ModDB page, and as I expected there’s a ton of mods for it.

It’s also interesting how many similarities it has to FL. The Ferengi (scavengers) could be Junkers, Species 8472 could easily be Nomads, the Federation could be Liberty, and so on. FL’s systems would be easy to recreate as it comes with a map editor.
It also has an accurate recreation of FL’s shield/hull system, planets about the same size as FL’s… Seriously, it’s made for this sort of thing.
Of course, I’d need to get FL’s models to A2 format (unsure on what it is as I need to install A2 on this PC as well), and probably hardpoint them as I’m not sure how A2 handles hardpointing.
So, what do you think?

I’ve started making progress on this. I’ve got an exporter for 3D Studio Max for .SODs, Armada 2’s model files. I’d use the MS3D exporter, but from what I hear it’s extremely buggy.
I’ve Googled around, but I can’t seem to find a 3DSMax plugin that imports FL’s model files. Is there one?

there is one in development or there is one being planned, if i’m not mistaking. however, the ms3d importer is actually not buggy. there are only a few things it doesn’t import, like glowmaps (you can however get to them with a UTF editor and apply them easily to the exported model) and other surface settings (?) and you’d need to re-hardpoint the models for armada, ofc.

Well, I’ll try the MS3D importer later and report back.

The Night Stalker Universe mod has a good number of Armada 2 Components in it. Look here

Maybe you can get permissions to use some of the stuff from the mod. -

Maybe you can get permissions to use some of the stuff from the mod.Well, I’m not sure I’ll be needing any of those, since I’m doing a mod that turns Armada 2 into Freelancer - Not the other way around.
