Lock mouse
-
It may not sound like an original idea, but here it is:
Is there any possibility to add an option to the original game’s options to lock the mouse while in space? What I mean is to keep the mouse in the center of the screen so you can only move your ship with the Num arrows (default).I ask it because a friend of my wants to play Freelancer but he can’t get used to mouse control because the only simulator he played is Galaxy on Fire (he played it so good… He finished it about 3 times), which has only arrow controls.
Thanks,
Poly. -
Tell your friend to man up and learn Freelancer. Even IF someone came up with a way to do this, he’d fail just as much. FL AI is vastly better at evasion than old style joystick/keyboard sims.
People don’t realize it, but FL’s AI is vastly superior to the AI in games like Freespace 2 and the old X-Wing games. They have all sorts of tricks that, while using the FL Mouse system, dont seem too hard to counter, but with a keyboard or joystick, you’d never touch them.
Now, someone may come along and try to help you out, but believe me when I tell you that your friend is better off getting over it and
LRNS2FREELANCER -
I tried that long time ago, and you should have seen him play… I explained him the keys and techniques, yet he found himself on turret view flying forward on cruise speed trying to catch an Order ship… My friend was only an example, there are many people who like locking the mouse while flying (take Black Prophecy for example).
If you don’t wanna help, you don’t have to.
About the AI: Thats right, I have never seen souch an AI in this time, and so easy to edit comparing to others. -
well, the locked mouse games definately have their advantages, but freelancer is just different and this is why we still mod it: it is in a way unique, not because of the controls but certainly they make the game too, rare in its kind.
about your friend, i have a client, too, i tried to explain the controls and he wonders, why he can not be fast and fire at the same time. it is, though, a matter of time and experience. he’ll get it rather himself by trial and error than if you try to put him on the right path from scratch. -

Launch the game, then unplug the mouse……
Don’t forget to go to option and attribute a key to fire…
Good luck^^I see you didn’t think too much… If I unplug the mouse, how can I navigate through the station’s menu?
@Gisteron: Youre right, Freelancer is really one of a kind and thats why its favourite simulator! (although it could use some more features). I’ll try to convince him, maby he will do better after watching “Let’s Play Freelancer”…
@adoxa: It doesn’t make the mouse unmoveable… Its not me who gonna use it, but my friend.
Thanks anyway!
