Normals/shading
-
I am getting desperate with a problem I just don’t seem to be able to fix. Ever seen that when your model looks perfect in MS3D, however, on exporting, the shading (or the normals, if you prefer) is messed up? This mostly happens on parts that have been duplicated and mirrored, however, when I took the plunge and rebuilt the other side manually, the result was still the same - one side shaded correctly, and the other side shaded incorrectly.
This problem persists on both Milkshapes 1.7.6 and 1.8.3, and in the old and new cmp exporters. (I have v0.2.1 and another older one the version number of which is not indicated, which has no export interface, so it will shrink your model 92x and mirror it incorrectly)
No matter what on earth I’m trying to do, the shading will definately be messed up. It seems as if the cmp exporter removed the normals of the model and re-generated them all by itself. Do you need screenshots to understand this problem? And last but not least, can you help me if possible?
Edit: Problem is persistant even with exporter 0.3 beta…

Screenshots please,
I am not entirely sure what you mean. -

I think you now understand the bugger. This generally appears when you create something using the ‘Face’ tool, by connecting vertices together, then duplicate that, and mirror it to the other side.
As you can see, in ms3d you can get the smoothing to work good, but in hardcmp no matter what you do it is going to be diminished. If I go for manually making the other side as well, the result is still the same, for some reason.
It doesn’t show TOO much in-game, but it still shows if you are really looking at it, and it bugs me… This is not the only time I ran into this, there were much more complex surfaces suffering the same fate as well.

would you mind sending me the CMP file for this so i can have a look at it? im not sure but i think you might have some vertexes that are overlapping one another that need to be welded.
[email protected] if you wish too

It may be good for you to know that I have not experienced this problem, however I do always make a point of ensuring that all faces are smoothed each time I copy & mirror some part.
Then when I have finished I select all parts and weld vertices, then clean the model using the model cleaner plugin.

he has Bj, happens there but its not as visible but it bugs him XD
