Ok so I'm only 10 years behind…

Hi all, played Freelancer when it came out, completed it, thought it was the best game ever and promptly forgot about it. Until the announcement of Star Citizen I had no idea such an awesome Mod and Multiplayer community existed. I have a colonel package waiting for me on the new game but thought I’d try freelancer again, have now completed it again and am looking for more. I’ve never played any of the multiplayer pvp side so glad this is here. Gonna have a look at the mods (complete noob to that) and see what takes my fancy. Any recommendations/advice?

Awesome stuff, thanks so much, downloading the crossfire addon now. If i join one of the multiplayer servers I assume I’m gonna get my ass kicked instantly, any tips?

The vast majority of servers have some form of “newbie protection”, usually by restricting PvP for characters below a certain level. You should have no issue finding a friendly community and starting up without getting ganked.
I highly recommend reading the server’s rules before joining however (whichever server you end up trying). You can usually know the server’s website from the description box at the bottom of the character selection screen, once you’ve selected the server in the list.

The best advice for online play i can offer is…
Never be afraid to go full pirate.
But know the rules on server piracy 1st… just don’t discount a “way of life” because the game has you running around as trent… saving the galaxy and all that… we all try to be the good guy when we hit MP… most times that ends with a repair bill from the 1st non savory player you’ll meet… prepare for that… hehe, start marking the kills on your starflier from the moment you leave Liberty… scan everything, loot lest ye be looted 1st… hardi har har…
That’s the precious thing about Freelancer, you kinda CAN be what you want… what you wanted… in MP … within server rules of course… so read them, and then read them again… many of the servers left are pretty strict on their rules
Just go out there… and enjoy.

I’d suggest a qualification…
First always get to know your players. When you first get on you will run into many different personality types but often servers tend to accumulate players of a certain personality type over others.Remember, you’re joining a community. If you get to know the players they’ll accept you regardless of the ‘role’ you decide to play. If you come in all cocky and smart-ass they’ll likely be all over you in order to put you ‘in your place’. Once you’ve ‘paid your dues’ they’re more likely to accept you as you are.
Above all, play with a sense of humor. I’ve seen too many people come in with an attitude and end up rage-quitting within a week or two because the server pop didn’t adjust to accomodate them. Have a sense of humor, take your beatings as they come, be willing to listen and to learn and you’ll do just fine whichever role you choose.

Yep - open system chat (Y) and talk to a couple of players first before you launch.
Or go on a quiet server and build up your skills money and courage, and then choose a server and mod you fancy.
Take a long-term view, you will probably be playing for a couple of years once you start!
So… if you’re hooked up, get ready for cold dinners, dinners in the dog, long separations, the kids (if you have them) growing up and looking different, and who knows, maybe a divorce! lol
