Destructible parts on ships
-
Does anyone know of any tutorials or the exact method how to model and export ships that have destructible parts? Example being vanilla capital ships which break up into a couple of debris parts upon destruction.
I assume that in addition to the actual ship model that people fly I also need to have a couple debris models to create during the fuse, but how exactly do I set it all up?
Cheers in advance.

First you need to split up your ship in speperate groups and export is as CMP. For this use P1p3rs CMP Exporter for Milkshape: http://the-starport.net/freelancer/forum/viewtopic.php?post_id=48557#forumpost48557
Of course you need additional to the visible model a physical model of the ship. For that I recommend to read that tutorial:

So splitting into several groups parented to root is enough then? No need to split the model into 3db files or however it works for vanilla ships?
Also, did any mods manage to successfully do this? It would probably help if I could look at their cmp files to get a clearer idea.

Normally you dont need any mod, you just need to look into the vanilla CMP files.
You split up your ship in Milkshape and while exporting P1p3rs Exporter Plugin merges every mesh with the same name to one group, parented to root.

What about the 3dsmax exporter then? I heard that can export groups properly. Any chance where I can get a compiled release?http://the-starport.net/freelancer/forum/viewtopic.php?post_id=49801#forumpost49801
