Happy 13th Birthday, Freelancer!

And it seems 13 is NOT an unlucky number in this case
FreeLancer is a teenager, still growing but has come quite a long way since the childhood days.
We have the awkward teen phases of trying out tons of things and really sticking with just a few but more and more stuff is still being discussed. So I’m hoping this website (in the entirety) can be archived somewhere just in case. It would be nice to have a historical record.

I was just now coming here to post this.

I’ve been playing since March of 2003, but I can’t any more. Windows downloaded a security patch on November 29th that has prevented me from playing on my Windows 7 machine. Can anybody tell me how to reactivate my favorite game?

Freelancer’s having a Bar-Mitzva

Can anybody tell me how to reactivate my favorite game?Kinda off topic, but here goes: I’ve never had any problems with running the game on Windows 7. Probably has something to do with the version of Windows, or whether or not you use a Crack. Do you have Patch 1.1 or JFLP installed?

I have the 1.1 patch. Everything was fine until the Windows November 29th security patch was auto down loaded to my machine. I’ve tried everything I can think of, but I don’t know what JFLP is?

try reinstalling FL and the 1.1 update with the ‘run as administrator’ option.
Also, try shutting down UAC to see if that helps. -
I think it’s to do with cd copy protection that Microsoft deemed a security risk, so disabled it and in doing so stopped a lot of games working. There are work-arounds, using a no-cd hack should do it I guess.

Posting here for anyone who stumbles upon this thread.
There’s a bypass for it, but the best way is to just use the official (legal) no-cd for Freelancer on this very site:
https://the-starport.net/freelancer/download/singlefile.php?cid=1&lid=2649
Also if you’re interested in the other method, Freelancer uses ‘SafeDisc v2.7’ and the ‘secdrv.sys’ is the file that requires the driver to be loaded. Luckily Microsoft left the driver in so you can manually reactivate it if you want.
Administrative Command Prompt:
sc config secdrv start= demand
sc start secdrvLeave the window open, when done playing enter this:
sc stop secdrvRebooting may reset the driver to ‘disabled’ again. Be sure to check.

EDIT: It is SafeDisc v2.7 that is used, not SecuROM; courtesy of PC Gaming Wiki: https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Freelancer

Heavily recommend not turning the SecuROM driver back on. It was disabled for a reason: it’s a gaping security hole that hasn’t been patched in years.
Use the no-CD instead, it’s a safer, easier way of doing it.
