Mod Idea - Against the Grain

I’m beating my head with other projects just now, but rather than creating new rocks, I’ll edit this post later with some new asteroid textures and let you all put them on the “Spaceballs”. I would suggest a bit more “crumple” on them. I’ve seen the real thing enough to know most asteroids in FL are a bit too spherical.
Edit: OKAY! Had a few textures for spacerocks. 17.5 mb of them so I zipped those puppy’s up. If you want to know what to do with the bump, normals, specularity, etc maps just slap them into a material, render them on a flat plane and render the result out as a single texture and use that on the asteroids.
Edit: Here’s the link. Enjoy the new “rocks”;
(Had to take link down as Google Cloud no longer file shares. Will submit textures to download page on 27 April. So far I’m hearing most cloud drives have closed file sharing as of Monday.)GREAT TIME for Google to change their policies for the cloud drive that reset all my cloud links. Above should be open without enailing my permission. This happened right after I posted this on Mon. 15 Apr. If it’s emailing me still then do so. I’ll deal with it.
Yes the are whole tex package for asteroids and planets from X3, so you might already have them.
On asteroid textures if spherical mapping looks off, go to a cubic mapping.
Decided to enter this fray using science. So taking averages of the dimensions of several Near Earth Objects and creating a 118 poly mesh that conformed to the result, I then created a single dds pseudo-seamless texture to place on it. In theory you can reduce this texture 3x before tiling appears.
The last table is for Vesta the largest “Asteroid” since the larger Ceres is now classed as a “dwarf planetoid”. Note the size. Hardly what we see in Freelancer which amounts to “Space Dust”.

@$!# Google cloud put new “policies” in effect yesterday.
I have it set up as I always did. The upshot is I don’t think there’s anyway to turn this off. I’m going to probably submit it for the downloads page. I griped to Google, haven’t got a response. I know XBox’s cloud crashed recently and lost all my Solitare Collection data. It could be the respose to some threat to cloud computing. Wait till tomorrow and try again. As Douglas Adams put in sky high letters: Sorry For The Inconvenience!Edit: Par for the course, Googles reply said load update. So I did and it’s really jerked around the interface and Googles docs and their learning pages for their cloud are for the old interface.
Now try it. HOWEVER the option “Can Access” is no longer there and only “Can View” so I’m hoping it doesn’t mean what it says.
Somebody try it and get to me on the result. I have many links to my cloud I’ll have to take down if they’ve made their drive “invitation only”.

Sadly is the word. It descibes the run around Google is giving it’s users too. Something really botched cloud computing and nobody wants to admit it. Google’s update yesterday made the situation worse. XBox’s Microsoft cloud crashed losing users data, the IRS’s cloud services crashed causing their websites to go down on Monday. So I’m sorry. 17mb is too big a file to transfer over my 4G with my data cap aleady busted for the month. I’ll take the link down as I’m doing with the 20+ others I’d shared data elsewhere with and on the 27 I’ll submit it for download. The only solice I have is I’m not alone in this, my design sites’ data sharing is basically screwed as of Monday.
Everybody’s getting permission requests and pulling their hair out too.EDIT: I copied this from Google Clouds new help file:
“With Google Drive on the web, you can view things like videos, PDFs, Microsoft Office files, audio files, and photos.”
Note “View”? No “file sharing” is mentioed any longer.
Zip files or any archive files are not mentioned now either.
In fact when I try to download my own zips it tells me “Unsupported Format”. It want’s a “viewer”. -
Google Drive hasn’t changed in years. The download option is there, you guys just need to stop being blind. Top right corner, there’s a big fat icon with an arrow pointing down that says “DOWNLOAD” when you hover over it.

Might be on PC. Isn’t on the Andriod app. In fact it’s a totally different program interface. Won’t waste time on a screen shot. Sorry I didn’t specify that. Believe me, it changed big time or it wouldn’t have been an issue. Though what I got back from Google summed up to oops. Sorry about stepping in to try and hand out freebies. I’ll crawl into my hole again.

Since you removed your link, I can’t actually check with yours, but when I try to open a Drive link, it just pops in Chrome with the exact same UI as on my desktop. If I try to open a file in the Drive app (say, a .7z archive), it downloads the file and opens it in whatever app you have associated with file management (I have Solid Explorer), which will then allow you to extract/copy/save it as desired.
I’m not seeing any kind of grand conspiracy here, just misunderstanding the UI.

Hi. All my links suddenly needed those email permissions becase an update zeroed everything and gave me only the option to allow people to “view” files. Let’s see then. Never used Google drive on PC.
Link to Asteriod.zip:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SzseCoUg8iNK8ekWcx5zsizSHiosY8VA/view?usp=drivesdk
As example here’s screenshot and that download only applies if I wanted to download the file off the drive:

“View” permissions are basically access permissions in Drive parlance. Just make sure anyone with the link can view and you’ll be able to download it fine.

Yep, been fielding email all day and taking down links.
Looking for another cloud sevice. Other mobile users in same boat. Last post on this. will submit asteroid textures to the dowload section later in the month. Bye. -

I’ve been trying to get them in game tonight but not working. I think it’s a problem with the Freelancer CMP exporter for Milkshape. Upon exporting the asteroid file, found this product phenq I have a sneeking suspicion it’s exporting as a blank file. The rock’s do not appear in game and upon trying to reimport the file back into Milkshape, it appears either blank, or it crashes.I don’t know why, but my 3db files as well are not being accepted by the game. Were you able to replace asteroid models? If yes, can you share the correct process, please?

I’m also not able to get my 3db files accepted by the game. Anu solution would be highly appreciated.

Sorry to be so late in this topic but I think the idea is awesome. In fact, I had basically the same idea back in 2005

(sadly it never got popular…)
Anyways, you might want to check out Allegiance (even older than Freelancer) - it has almost exactly this gameplay (just a lot more complex), definitely worth checking out: https://www.freeallegiance.org/

This strand may appear to be undercut by the idea that drives the film forward - the patriarchal notion of two friends fighting over a desirable
