Is there a way to create (and make FL use) a DDS with a better Explicit Alpha than the 8-bit?

I using bigger and more detailed textures for the Starspheres, but found that the DcDtEcOcOt ones suffer aesthetically from the fact that the Alpha channel in the DDS looks horrible.
It doesn’t look horrible in the original file.
I still use the old .DDS plugin*. I presume it might be possible to create DDS textures with better alpha channels — but would Freelancers swallow these?
Anyone any experience with this?
- The good old DDS plugin.
(Btw I also still use an ancient version of Photoshop because I can’t get my plugins to work with a new one)

I tried several of the more fancy looking ones, but in the end I decided to give interpolated alpha a try, and that one seems to work fine as I want it.
I’m not sure how ‘universal’ that is though. Need to try it out on my other computer.

Of course Freelancer supports DXT5 explicit alpha, you just need to add the OcOt description/nodes to the material type.
