Brand new to Freelancer
-
Hi, I’ve been playing games like this for years but when Freelancer came out I didn’t have a computer that could run it and sort of forgot about it. I rediscovered the game recently (last week) and remember having wanted to play it all those years ago.
I just installed and got it tor run on Widows 7 and have started the single player campaign. I am interested in getting to play more and possibly setting up a server.
About me,
I have a spaceship simulator in my basement for playing Artemis Spaceship Bridge Simulator and am an avid Scifi and space fan. I hope that I can play this game on the 5 PCs that I have networked in a Lan type of arrangement.
I have a full time job, go to school full time and have 2 kids. My gaming time is very limited.

Welcome here,
So you’ve got friends to do some LAN parties at home on FreeLancer ?
-
I have a Starship bridge that I am building in my basement. It has 8 computers connected in a LAN. Not sure if I can use that for Freelancer without too much work.
I just got to mission 5 of the main story. Really enjoying the game so far.

You can use it to make a local server to play with friends on, but Freelancer doesn’t support any kind of shared ship ala Artemis Bridge Simulator, unfortunately. You’d all be in your own, separate ships, but you’d be able to run missions together and such.

I was thinking more like we could all work like a fleet of ships. Maybe even get all of them into an online game. Maybe a couple of freighters and several fighter escorts… not really sure. I want to finish the single player mission before trying online play.
I have read about the different servers and I think I’d likely try my hand on a vanilla server. I know multilayer can be quite different from the single player campaign.
One thing I am wondering is if you die in multilayer do you lose your credits, cargo, ship? I’m assumin you lose something but you don’t start from scratch everytime.
-
You can absolutely do that yeah. Dying just loses you your current cargo, the game isn’t really harsh.
-
Dying in MP is sort like Kenny in South Park. “The Killed Kenny!... Oh hello Kenny wher’ve ya been?” Don’t be scared, the pain is temporary. The embarrassment…???

cool, thanks everyone, I just completed the single player campaign about a week ago and I really liked it., I think the last few missions were a bit rushed, like they gas pedaled the story there but it was still good.
Now I need to figure out this whole online thing.

Welcome to the world of Freelancer mods! Enjoy your stay!
Freelancer can run servers and support things, but why not consider joining an already-existing server? They’re there for a reason
You also won’t have to worry about IonCross or fidgeting around with FLHook to get things working.–-------------------------------------------------------
