Let's get Coordinated!

I deleted my post before anyone responded as i didnt get my point over well enough and knew that it wasnt productive.
I have said enough on the matter and am disapointed that people decide to jump on a deleted post even though its prompted before they post their reply. A Very childish and immature response @ HazardFN in light of the fact that you know I had deleted the post.
I was already in the process of writing my reply before I knew your post was deleted, when I posted my reply I had realised your post had gone…

Let’s leave it shall we gentlemen? Both parties have made thier points and had thier say.
Anyone for a mince pie? I have squirty cream to go with it! ;D

FFS! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU GUYS THINKING?!
were SAVING the community to rip apart, not RIPPING it apart!
Wolfie has a point.
-
Indeed. Any further discussion must actually be constructive in a POSITIVE way, please ::)
Otherwise, I’ll have to go split-happy and may unfortunately split things into the garbage bin, so be careful…

Openlancer is not dead(for now).
Site: www.opengameforge.orgWanna keep freelancer(not the new game with new story/ships/characters etc.) alive - read my previous post in this topic.
Or get the source code for FL. (We should keep trying here, but damn MS… Â >:(:()

@roo
i tend to say what i think… no matter if its positive or negative
and right now there is a pretty good balance betwen both… but some ppl always tend only to see the negative comments and ignore the possitive stuff… it always has been that way in the FL community and it will never changedont blame me for that negative stuff because i have not caused it… i just pointed out that there was much which went wrong
if you guys want to put on pink glasses in order to see a shiny FL world then feel free to that
but i prefere to see the reality with all its mistakes in order to do it better next time
the FL community does not have the resources for much more mistakes which demoralize the playersMission: Save FL
many ideas (for sure not all bad ones)
atm i see just one idea which could have a positive effect on the FL communitywhat does it help to create a community mod while FL did survice for so long because of the many different mods?
what does it help to create another FL site (even if its called “lets-save-FL.com” if nobody knows that site and the few ppl that know about it prefere to visit the old communities?
what does it help to have vids about mods if you cannot spread them en masse?
what does it help to create a wiki site?
…
…you can try to prove me wrong… but ideas are no concepts yet and my almost 9 years of experience in the Lancer community showed me how easy ideas can fail and what hard concequences it can have
its always worth to think twice before crying “hurray” -
The problem isn’t with the legal stuff, it’s with the amount of work required to actually do such a thing. Making a whole GAME ENGINE is no small task.
Plus, that’s what LS is attempting already with GE and he’s succeeding alright.
But again, for the last time, keep this thread about FL. Not about GE, not about OL, not about Space Sim XX349-A, it’s about FL as it is.
@OP: I agree that some ideas are not as good as others, but the two last examples I need to nuance:
-What is the point of videos you say? Well, you need to take it step-by-step. First, make the actual content you want to distribute. Once that is done, try to publish and distribute it. It is usually MUCH easier to get content up when you have it and can showcase it than when you’re making everything up out of thin air and promises. If the stuff is well made, there’s a higher chance to see it published on larger gaming sites such as ModDB or IGN. If you’re only planning to do it, they’ll tell you to call later.
-What is the point of a wiki? Well first, a wiki would not be used to attract people, but more to serve as a consolidated tutorials and game information repository. You could have everything ranging from tips & tricks for the game to detailed analysis of each file’s purpose and each block’s structure with each property’s meaning, all updated much more efficiently than any article-based website could and with a much more efficient navigational structure. A Wiki would be a tribute to the community’s knowledge and would help off newcomers and oldies alike.
-
seriously if you want to promote mods then you simply have to go to moddb and publish your work
but against all expectations it got very silent over there in the past monthsand the wiki is still a bad idea coz you could simply post that information on the already existing FL sites and keep the community together this way instead to spread the content over to more and more places while the important (central) communities loose members/visitors
the basic idea should not be to spread the community all over the net but to get it closer together
realizing this i wonder why there were never serious talks between the communities about the future of FL (at least not to my knowledge)a coin does not only have one side and its better to think about what might happen very carefully before decisions are made and you realize that the coin did not land on one of the flat sides
this is not the first lancer game that ive seen dying because of failing ideas and people which ignored the real problems -

what does it help to create a wiki site?Mostly agree here. This can(will) attract people for only some SHORT period of time. Freelancer is old. Mods can’t do everything(needed). Reborn will help(things I’ve said above). Or maybe source code.
Let’s assume we’ve attracted new people to FL. But an average player will leave it soon(3-6 month), cos it’s old and lacks many features, there’s also a chance that a good FL clone will appear replacing FL.
Only new FL is the way. Advertising something(FL) that doesn’t meet the demands of sophisticated hard-boiled players has a small use.
Not everybody’s favorite genre is space-sim.
Freelancer should be made the game it was meant to be… should I remind the ways to do it again?..

OK, I appreciate your point OPR8R, but by always repeating ‘we wont get’ & ‘it wont work’ is almost cursing any project before its started.
We know you have been around a while. We know you have a lot of experience from TLR and we know you lead an extremely succesful site, so we value your feedback. However, this doesnt mean its not worth trying.
You have said alot of stuff wont work, and why it wont work. But you havent recommended any alternatives.
Before you say anything, I know you have recommeded some in the past, I have been a part of those conversations. But alot of the current people here were not there, so it might be wise to share with them. -
Does nobody have ANYTHING positive to say at ALL?
for a Save FL Forum nobody is seriously trying…
If you have no interest in saving/helping FL then why are you even here posting in this thread?
Sadly I think you’re right, everybody just talks and talks instead of taking some action.
We need to utilize the time spent on arguing on more constructive tasks, such as promoting the game.
Ideas for promoting the game:
-Spread the word: lend your friends the Freelancer CD to install it and to play a while, then drag them in the modding community or a RP community (such as Disco)
-Develop: use your spare time to work on development of FL. But also keep enough time for your hobby’s because your brain relaxes when you’re doing what you love, and when you’re relaxed you can think clearly of new ideas. -

this is not the first lancer game that ive seen dying because of failing ideas and people which ignored the real problemsWho said the Wiki would be a separate site? As for ModDB, this works well for one mod, but you have more chances of catching someone’s attention with many different mods which all cater to a different audience. The Star Wars fan won’t care a single bit for Discovery, but he’ll go crazy seeing Freeworlds. If you have one video with everything in, you have a chance of getting more people.
Vital, I’m sorry but I think this is a bit of an utopic point of view. If you think you can do it, go ahead, but making a game is a lot tougher than it may seem like. Even more than you think.
-
nobody said that “we” (i assume i was meant) have no interest in saving… the opposite is the case… that is why we are posting
to show where stuff does not work is nothing negative… its a different point of view which might prevent mistakes and in the same way you listen to those which have all these nice ideas you should listen to those which see problems that are caused by those ideas.
And yes - Im leading a pretty large community and of course I discussed this topic long time ago. Reason for me not to throw in those “alternative ideas” is (beside the fact that nobody outside SWAT was interested in that in the past) the current situation of this discussion which is chaotic enough atm.
Right now its even unsure if you ppl want to keep FL alive or if you want a new FL/game… seriously judging by the discussions this is not clear. -
OPR8R, I’m not talking about anything other than FL here.
The discussion may be chaotic, so why not, as experience people here, lead the conversation back on track? Is that not what we should be doing?

Agree with you. You are right. It’s damn pretty hard.
So we should get the source code now, I guess?…And one more thing that would probably help to keep FL alive…
More step-by-step detailed tutorials on everything that can be done, and a detailed list of things that are possible to do.This would help people(such as me, for example) to change what they want without wasting the time and attract some of their friends(such as my friends, for example) to FL.
Many new features are available, but no tutorials. And yes I am ready to write tuts of what I know.

I understand what you mean tutorials are a little scattered around nowadays - HOPEFULLY the new Wiki we have planned will alleviate this, We at starport (that includes the members not just admins) can then moderate this Wiki and hopefully create a concise list of detailed tutorials with screen shots - and in time (with community help) perhaps translate those tutorials into a multitude of different languages, but these things need to grow slowly and don’t happen overnight
