Increasing Effect Visible Ranges
-
Well, as the title suggests, I need a little help on increasing the maximum visible range of effects, among other things.
I know it requires using a hex editor to edit certain values in various .dll files and the freelancer.exe, and I’ve used Dev’s Limiting Breaking 101 topic for my information.
But despite being as certain as I can be that I edited the right values, after testing it in-game, nothing has changed. So, I’ll ask a couple of questions to help narrow down what useful information people can give me.
1. Which version of Freelancer would you suggest that I do my hex editing with? V1.0 or 1.1? And on that vein, I assume that I need a fresh install of FL with which to work on?
2. What type of hex should I use? Raw Hex, Intel or Motorola? (This is for when using the Base Converter to convert various values to hex and vice versa)
Short of that, any other useful information, tips or even a quick on-the-spot tutorial would be most helpful.
Thanks,

Although you have edited values in the respective files, be aware you also need to apply your changes to the effects code in the .ini files. Think LOD ranges etc, double check them all.
Also note which version of the Freelancer.exe and .dll files you have been editing, version 1.0 and 1.1 files will obviously have differences due to being coded differently.

Actually, I just went and had another go at editing server.dll and I do believe I have got the extended range working correctly. I was aware of editing .ini files, but I guess I just forgot to mention that. lol.
Thanks for the reply, and I’m fairly sure I have started to get the hang on it.

Don’t forget to change the pbubble in the effect itself. I believe the values may be inner and outer LOD ranges, but the second value typically sets the max viewing distance of the FX.
