MOTY + USAF = WFT?

I don’t understand what the fuss is about….
Are you all going to disown your TV because they have adverts about the military on it? Should adverts in Magazines be removed as well? Worst still, those bloody cadets must be Satans work… those poor young children who volunteer to join up and enjoy some fun, they’ll be brain washed!
It sounds like the only argument against it is that it’s targeting younger users and that they’ll somehow be brainwashed by an advert before a game? If they’re stupid enough to spend the next 5 - 7 years dreaming of being in the armed forces, off of one or two promotional videos, without any further research and background investigation… then in truth they won’t get into the military as they’ll be too damned stupid.
Honestly, if I didn’t suspect otherwise, it appears you all think children are complete retards. Give them some credit at least… these adverts may make them find out more info about the armed forces. It will NOT make them join.

I’ll be monitoring this topic some what.
I have to remind you that this is not a Political platform but a Freelancer gaming platform.
EDIT:
I know this is a oftopic discussion, but please keep it nice.
/ EDIT:I understand peoples arguments but it should stay with this topic, other topics regaring political issues will get locked/removed.
We have people from many different cultures and countries here, and it is easy to upset people with certain arguments. My 2 cents.
Please carry on. -
I figure the USAA, USAF and the USN are free to advertise anywhere so long as they don’t start using Subliminal Messages.
It’s their money, they pay for advertisement so that Moddb can get better, Moddb gets better more Mods and people come on, businesses like the US Armed Forces pay to upgrade Moddb’s server.
Ok, maybe not like that, but provided they pay their bills, the wheel keeps turning.I got no problem with advertising provided it’s not false-advertising.

maybe some people would react/think different if the sponsor would be Iran, Pakistan, Lybia, North Korea or Osama Bin Laden himself.
I dont want any of them put they banner infront of my mod in the same way i dont want that the USAF is not doing it.
mod presentation 2009
mod xyz - presented by moddb and Al Qaedasorry but that is as inacceptable as a US Airforce banner infront of my mod.

Question:
When you people applied to the moddb and submitted a mod to be voted on, what were the terms?
Did they state anything about this?I surely can imagine that a person from Germany doesn’t like his mod to be connected to a USairforce add campaign.
And the Moddb should remove that add from the mod on request, unless they clearly stated that they act as political / add platform for the US goverment.Edit:
Wonder if i do a digg, or a whois if its gonna tell me “hosted by the whitehouse under supervision of the secret service” THAT would be hilarious.
-
maybe - but for some weird reason i but all players will come from those parts of the world ^^
@worfeh
when we decided to take part in the MOTY there was no sign of the military
they have changed the moddb sites just 1-2 days ago
they even have changed the colors of their sites in order to fit to the USAF logo
If i would have known about it from the beginning i wouldnt have wasted 1 month for promotional work for my mods
and im just one of many who are very upset about those changes -
I suppose I better make my say… and join this ‘discussion’.
I agree with Chips and a few others.
Thats all I will say, otherwise I will typing for the next few hours and things will start to turn nasty.
-
@Chips: The military is a state-controled institution and from my opinion (and i think OP’s to) a state-controled institution does not advertise on the TV in magazins or even on none state-controled pages on the inet.
The US military gets money from the state right? The state gets money from their peoples right? So u pay tax to the state and they use it to advertise on the inet in magazines etc.?
Sry but that doesn’t sound right, in europe a state-controled institution can’t do that and if they would it would be a big affair.
Also i feel that it is not ok to advertise for military and therefor also for war on places where little kids can see it and moddb is surelly such a place.Edit: U can also use Addblock for Firefox or SeeMonkey, it will remove the advert for u (thats also the reason why i did not understand what this threat was about when OP posted it).

I live in the Netherlands, and the military here have commercials on TV and have adds on some websites.
But i do agree that goverments should stay away from international visited websites, like game review websites. -
Well in the UK our Military do advertise on TV and magazines.
And I don’t mind it… before you all jump down my throat let me explain something.
I am not military material, never could or would be. However I have a lot of old school friends that are military guys, and my grandad was in WW2 based out in Egypt with the Royal Air Force. So I understand alot about what they do and what they go through.
Now, I dont personally agree with alot of decisions goverments have taken over the last 5 years involving the US and UK military. However, as long as my friends are involved, I will also support them. Not the decisions made, but the people having to carry out their orders.
Not every decision is the right one, but do not blame the people at the end of the command chain. They are doing their job. Just the Police, or Tax collectors or Social Services.
So do I mind the Military advertising in the UK? No I don’t.
No I mind the US Military advertising on MODDB… No I don’t… not as long as the site stays open, stays advertising Mods and gives us a place to advertise Freelancer.
Which is all that should matter.
-
May as well copy my post from the other site as I know many do not visit there.
"Not sure what the real problems is but as we have off-topic fora here goes .
We seem to be quite happy with violent, abusive, sexist, racist gameplay on the assumption that the players have the sense to understand and will not then go out and do the things they play.
But the same players will suddenly all be brainwashed and join up when they see sponsorships.
Sounds like a cake and eat it attitude.
Regardless of rights or wrongs with violence, current human nature is dominated by agression and the world revolves around it. The military are societies santisation of the basic problem and also a convenient target.
They are also the first port of call when someone whose views do not fit into your world goes and parks their tank on your lawn."
-
sry but i made my decision
I act by principles and not by the amound of money that gets donatedA man of principles well done, I am sure all respect that, I do.
"I may disagree with what you say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it”

Ive been able to get a working compromise with the moddb staff. Agreeing that moddb unfortunatly is now bound to a contract with the US airforce only small changes can be done and already have been done meanwhile. Eventhough these changes still touch the limits of what is acceptable the situation changed to conditions that Im willing to agree with.
moddb statement:
I didn’t expect the response we have received and have taken this on board. In future I will be extremely careful with regards to anything that may question a “certain” individuals ideals and principle.
As my “intervention” in this issue since its beginning has caused the unwanted side effect that a bunch of modding crews (alltogether 23 mods) want to leave moddb and have contacted me to deal with this matter the talking is not over yet. Geez why do i always get in such situations? (no - that was a rethorical question)
Trying to convince those modding crews to stay now that the compromise was done I will also continue my talks with moddb to show them that the best mods are not neccessarily based on main stream games. Maybe it will be possible that next year (next to the not existing military sponsors) the voting will be done a bit different in order to motivate more games (which are not main stream ego shooters) to take part in the MOTY.
