Hey there- Questions from a newbie -
-
Ok, before anything, he’s my situation.
I’m new to Freelancer. ( 2nd day ? )
I’m loving Freelancer. ( Dad and I spent many hours playing last night, vanilla of course , each of us are in Heavy Fighters after we did a nice litle trade run that netted us about 100k,)So, heres where we are at the moment. Not quite ready to head into multiplayer servers, so I have one that I run of my computer that I created.
The thing is though, I have absoutely NO CLUE how to do anything different with it…
I’m wondering if it’s possible to:- Have a player able to own more than one ship at a time
- Make it so that there are more ships around to fly! ( So far been from The Japaneese area land ( Shinyko? ) To New London , only seen a few different ships to buy ).
- Be able to give/ take away / bank credits to make it eaiser to transfer from character to character? ( Had to do this with trade ship )
I’m also curious of a few things:
-Are there any area’s similar to say, Low - SEc in eve online? –- Where its possible to be a bit of a pirate ( attacking trade ships ) without 100000 police engaging us in half a second ?
-
Is it even worth blowing up thoose ships carrying many thousands of commodies? ( I’ve blown up one or two carying 40K + only for it too drop 5 or 6…
-
I’ve seen the option to hail a ship, is it possible to make them pay ransome or give part of thier cargo in exchange for not being blown up ?
-
HOW does one equipt items? I’ve picked up items that my ship could fit, but the only way I’ve seen how to is to sell it, then buy it back for even more to equipt.\
-
Are there ships in this game with more specific roles? ( I.E. Missle boats, mining ships, cloacking capable ships, Long range engagement (sniping)
Thank you ! Sorry for all the questions, but searching the forums confused me as I had NO clue what any of this stuff is

Therre a few server tools avaible and all of them are in the TSP download area.
I guess u should try FLHook and maybe Ioncross Freelancer Operator both will allow u to send cash from one char to another Flhook will do that via ingame cmd and on IFSO u have to edit each player munualy and every edit needs a temp ban.
If u want to fly more than the vanilla ships (from what u told us U’ve not seen the good ships yet ) u need to play one the few mods (there are also some public mods avaible which u could run on your server).
Greetz
MindP.s.: Sry but i can’t answer the other questions, not enough time.

Owning more than one ship per character is currently not possible -the game engine was not designed for it. But you may have multiple characters on one account, each with a different ship, faction alignment, and cash on-hand.

If you go into the Freelancer\DATA\SHIPS\ directory, you can see how many types of ships there are; it’s quite a few even in vanilla, but many are in the outerlying edge worlds / Omicrons which usually are more pirate based. Those areas also have more wrecks to find in general, plus better mining, and higher level weapons. You start running into the real baddies in the game when out there in the Omicrons, which have their own benefits when hunted. Also be sure to keep track of what bribes are offered where, as Zoners are friendly with all factions it can help out if you choose to pursue a pirate’s life. Still, for huge diversity in ships, the way to go is finding a mod that both of you can enjoy. ModDB has quite a few videos of the mods in action, plus have a look at the screen shot section here, and each mod’s forums for a little further research.

Seems you got this taken care of via add-ons

The Edge World systems have few police, but Bounty Hunters replace them and are pretty well armed in some very maneuverable fighters (one of my favorite ships is their Hammerhead VHF, a bit less heavy duty than the Corsair Titan, Outcast’s Saber, and Civilian Eagle -which many place as the top of the heap, but it is more maneuverable than all of them).
-
Hailing / forcing a tax is not possible in vanilla -but perhaps in a future mod, it’s not built into the game mechanics.

Equipping an item is done when landed on a base / planet / outpost. Notice the mini icon in the upper corner of the item’s icon. It is the engagement link for each item, when it looks like open jaws it is in your inventory unmounted.

Gunboats and Freighters are pretty much as specific a role as vanilla offers. Freighters can take the mining role, plus have the armament to defend themselves from pie-rats seeking to relieve you of long hours of mining effort. The longest range guns fill “sniper” roles, but you must have a good scanner equipped, and even then stock FL limits your range to… 5k distance if I recall. In 2003 this was a wise choice to keep game performance optimal.
Weight your options when choosing weapons; Power consumption, versus Damage output, versus Projectile speed, versus Range, versus Refire rate. I’ve found that matching Projectile speed and Range helps with accuracy. But yeah, vanilla I think 750 or 900 is max range, which is pretty uhm close. You will find a huge variety of differing weapon designs in mods though, with some ships packaged with ship-specific weaponry for optimal firepower / energy efficiency, plus better boosters and shields.
In general though, it’s almost always good to run through any game in single player once, because the story takes you through much of the game’s far reaches and provides a wide array of the more rare adversaries.
Of course going full multi-player from the git-go, with mods, you can just have fun exploring and wind up with better than vanilla equipment.
Enjoy

- Have a player able to own more than one ship at a time
Not possible atm, but you got me to the idea for suggesting such an option for FLHook.
- Make it so that there are more ships around to fly! ( So far been from The Japaneese area land ( Shinyko? ) To New London , only seen a few different ships to buy ).
Check out some mods, hehe
Some released mods have over 100 or 150 or even more ship to purchase !-Are there any area’s similar to say, Low - SEc in eve online? –- Where its possible to be a bit of a pirate ( attacking trade ships ) without 100000 police engaging us in half a second ?
In the border, independent and edge world you will find a much lower police and military activity, though, in MP NPCs mostly get ignored, players count there (they quite often take up roles such as navy/police/anti-pirates, pirates/taxers, Freelancer, bountyhunters/mercenaries etc.)
Also, each clan has a relationship to other clans of the same server- Is it even worth blowing up thoose ships carrying many thousands of commodies? ( I’ve blown up one or two carying 40K + only for it too drop 5 or 6…
Sometimes you are lucky and they drop more ^^
- I’ve seen the option to hail a ship, is it possible to make them pay ransome or give part of thier cargo in exchange for not being blown up ?
In SP no, but in MP pirate players tend to request some credits from their human victim for not killing him.
- Are there ships in this game with more specific roles? ( I.E. Missle boats, mining ships, cloacking capable ships, Long range engagement (sniping)
Check out tha modzZz!
Cloaking has become possible due to FLHook, not sure where the tutorial for it went to. But you may want to PM W0dk4 in order to ask him how you can configure your FLHook to this will work.
Mining ships - I personally only have seen this in the mod I am actually playing, but I don’t want to be bad and advertise a mod over others except you especially ask me for it ^^
Sniping…I already thought about that, it could be quite funny - Against players of course ;D
I just imagine…your enemy is a newbie, 9.8k away, you kill him and he just thinks “WTF???” ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D -
Scanner have to be made buyable first
(And created if I am not mistaken)
In normal FL you mine by shooting the very small pieces of asteroids all over your screen while being in a field.
