Can’t you export in .3ds format from Gmax and import that back in 3ds Max (or vice-versa)?

All of my ships had built in gmax, before i met with this 3ds max 6, and i have to learn this texturing thing. -

Thanks for the link Lancer, but its an exporter from 3dsmax into milkshape, anyway i need this one when i have to make cmp from ms3d.
What i need, is an importer from md3 into 3dsmax, because i cant open the gmax files with 3dsmax6.
I have found one but sadly the file was unavailable.
I hope someone could help me in this, i dont want to start the drawing again in 3dsmax.Thanks in advance,

Try LithUnwrap, it loads m3d files and will let you export in a number of the main formats.

MS3D supports MD3 file imports. If you can’t find a plugin for Max6 to directly import MD3, you can use MS3D to import, then just export again as OBJ. Max6 supports OBJ format, yea? I know Max7 does at least.I can import/export from 3dsmax to ms3d, just funny thing there is no possibility to export from gmax to 3ds max directly.

Ah! I know this one. Only exporter…belive me, i searched the google for it.

I don’t know, the page seems to give instructions both way. What’s wrong with it?

If you track down the instructions you will see this:
http://www.katsbits.com/htm/tools_utilities.htm#md3
And theese are just exporters.
As i read, there was a “conflict” between the developers of the both programs, and the result was the separating of the files from each other without chance of converting.
Only one thing is possible so far, if i buy the 3ds max engineering refernce accessory for a price as i’d buy a house near to the sea…
It has a plugin which allows to convert between gmax and 3ds max.
I spent more than one week on google searching for this converter without result, true today morning i found something what may works as Mini_Me advised:
http://home.comcast.net/~gloryuntogod/mmfsdjw/gmax_max.htmlIt seems it work on 3dsmax v7 but i will try.

You obviously don’t have much experience at converting a mesh from one format to another.
If there is no direct route between 2 applications then you need to find a “go between”, both myself & mini_me have pointed you in the direction of a “go between”, but you still don’t get it.Open Gmax and load in one of your models, use the Quake export plug-in you mentioned earlier and export your model as an .MD3, start Lithunwrap and load the .MD3 file in with it’s importer, save the file from lithunwrap as either .OBJ or .3DS, start up MAX and load in the converted mesh.
Easy.

“Easy” yes. I tried what you mentioned before as i tried this unwrap following its tutorial, but i cant export in 3ds or obj format only bmp from its template folder, and luv, lut, lub, Ist formats from its export folder.
And as i wrote i have found a converter but the file was deleted, and i hoped if someone has it here. -
I would avoid 3ds format since it doesn’t have native texture support. If it does in those then it was a late addition before they released 3DS Max
