Character Transfer or Account Recovery help
-
I am new to running a Freelancer server. We are using FLHook with several plugins right now. A player is reporting a lost account due to computer issues. Could someone inform me on how to either move his character to his new account or recover his account ID/signature?

For other admins then…
When a user loses his account id, get him to start a new one with a simple character name that you can recognise easily, and ask him/her for at least one of the old character names so you can find that too. He/she must launch and use the new character for a landing at a station (even back at the same one) so that the new file is created properly.
Using Ioncross or your favourite FL Server control programme, look up the old character name to get the old folder name and path. Look up the new character name to get the new folder name and path.
(You must restart FL Server and maybe also your control programme to rebuild the player file tables, so schedule a time for these next steps).
When you are ready:-
1. Stop your FL Server control programme and FL Server.
2. Back up the entire “C:\Documents and Settings(your windows account name)\My Documents\My Games\Freelancer\Accts” folder (e.g. with the Accts folder name showing in Windows Explorer’s right panel, select it, Ctrl-C, then Ctrl-V to make a quick copy and name that copy to “Accts.todaysdate” ).
3. Find and delete the single character file from the player’s new folder. Do NOT delete the file named “name”.
4. Transfer the player’s old folder contents (but NOT the file named “name”) to the new folder and delete the old folder.
5. Restart FL Server and also restart your Server Operator programme, in the correct order.Should be done.

**Note : don’t delete ‘name’ from the new account folder, it contains the new account’s password. If you erase it the player will be unable to log into the account…

If this is about finding a new char then just rebuilding control program’s base will do, and this is required only if you couldn’t find it already.1. Stop your FL Server control programme and FL Server.
Not really necessary if you don’t want to shut down the server. There maybe glitches in char creation on the affected keys when you “hot-swap” chars, but all be fine after (scheduled) server restart. And you may need to rebuild playerbase in ioncross.2. Back up the entire “C:\Documents and Settings(your windows account name)\My Documents\My Games\Freelancer\Accts” folder
This can take time, so if you know what you’re doing you can skip backup step. Anyway, you should have backup schedule for your charsWhat i want to say is: caution is good, but i’d hang myself if i needed to do a backup and shut down the server each time i wanted to move some chars

Yeah shutting down the server is not actually required when doing this. I’ve moved player accounts over to new MPID folders with no issues just by copy/pasting the character file into the new folder and then deleting the old account folder. And yeah backup is probably overkill especially if you already have regular backups scheduled as is. It might be a good idea to backup the one account you’re fiddling with I suppose, but that’s about it. To each their own though
