The-Starport FLServer ?

I know it really sounds nice having everyone give everything into one mod, but it simply wont work for multiple reasons, be it inflated egos, or simply style differences of certain mods. Its already been discussed a lot and I really dont want to start the debate here. Also, with a real “TSP”-mod, we’d get in competition with the general FL scene which we want to prevent.
Same applies to vanilla Freelancer, or enhanced Freelancer btw., there are plenty of servers to play on (DFLS, Hamburg City, Procyon, etc…) -
Eh, do you still have the AA stuff around? What about just hosting it for the moment why we still continue the discussion? If it is fine, we might keep it then, maybe in an altered version, who knows….
Also, it would be nice to have a shoutbox at the forums to call friends quickly online to the server since there might be not such many players in the beginning plus stuff like AA can’t be really played without other players, eh?
-
Hence why a specifically designed mod would be best. I’ve no problem with using AA for the time being, but I think something built for TSP’s situation would have better odds and would be more fun (which is of course paramount).
I’m discussing something with a few people, there might be something going soon

There’s only two real choices, either vanilla, or a mod.
One real choice: TC compatible with vanilla

W0dk4,
I’m for the simplest mod, little or no overhead for the admins, capture the flag or races or whatever…
How about just two or maybe 3 systems at the most:-
1. System 1 completely empty apart from a base station at each of the compass points (that means North, South, East and West for the Graddies here!! )
Those are just for players to dock at, in clans/groups/teams, for repairs, could sell all available equipment and 3 different ships each so that there could be a choice of 12 ships in the mod to keep things simple.
Any group combat or race or hare & hounds event can be staged here, admins can make the announcements for what event will take place.
2. System 2 would be an arena with however many stages you want, from Level 1 (easy, maybe 8 NPCs) to Level XX (dead in 2 seconds unless you’re brilliant, large numbers of NPCs at highest rank with extreme weapons loadout).
In our mod’s arena system we have 24 arenas, each is in a 10km vignette zone with a numbered marker buoy in the centre. NPCs turn up in encounters repeatedly until the player feels he can go to the next zone. The higher ones are very tough.
3. System 3 - Optional
Same as System 2 but NPC’s replaced by players, starting at the level 1 buoy - the players having to stay at that level until they defeat another player before moving to the next level.
And maybe after 5 repeated defeats a player should move down to the next lower level too.
Buoys could be dockable bases so players could park there until they defeat someone.
I think System 3 would be favourite because players could drop in for a few minutes blast, see who’s there, throw some insults & taunts, and go back to work again before the boss notices!
The mod creators could have a blast putting everything into 3 systems that they want for visuals, ships, weapons etc, this would keep server load low too, and maintaining the mod would be minimal, just adding nice things now and then.
Earning Money - starting with the base ship, money could be paid on NPC kills in the Arena system, or as mission payments if someone can control the mission sequence in levels from 1 to xx so that a player could not do a level 3 until he’s completed a level 2 mission.
In the player combat system money could be earned by big bounties paid on real players
Whaddayasay?

I like the NPC level arena idea, where you have to fight waves of NPCs.
Anyways, my idea was to structure the server just like an FPS server, where everyone is always in one “map” (= FL system). Mapchange means everybody will automatically switch to a different system, where there is a new scenario (CTF, race, Coop mission, etc…)

Hard to believe it not possible at this late stage in a way, seeing how splintered and fragmented the overall scene is now, bringing it all together in one place would make some sense.
I’m looking at the top of the page and seeing 573 players on 103 servers, say no more

Just a simple, cool, nice and simple, for a few minutes’ drop-in-play-meet-the-pals-go-back-to-work!

bump
So how does it look like atm? AA only or a second server as well?

Well… ye can have XLR?.. alter it for your needs… im kinda in the planing stages for another version (alot leaner & meaner) anyways…
I say this becuase it has just about everything from the “glory days” of Freelancer… & newer funkyness… es… ess and i’d hate to see it just get shelved. She was always meant for such event based shenanigans so there’s alot of basecode you get down with and make it conform to whatever your needs are…
Change her name… code… i don’t care… everyone credited for the mod is just about still here… might save ye’s a few weeks of work, even if you just gut her for the fx & sound stuff
As i stated… im starting again “fresh” with all this new knowledge gleamed from the past year and a bit since i’ve been back online so i wont be working on it in its current form anymore… she needs a “team” to forward and complete… & im just 1 guy, you guys are a “team”… well… teams, & it would make a great event mod with a touch of work (already has almost every sci-fi catered for… event coded systems ect…)
Apart from all gibber i just wrote… great idea! been a long time since there was a main server… anything to make it easy for new ppl to meet the old croud is a good thing… i can already imagine the crossover battles between different mod fanboys as well… lol sounds like alota fun!

Yeh, ST has some unsettled scores with those kidz here too!
heheheheheheheeeeehhhh…

I’ve been playing single player for more than tn years. Part of the challenge is starting t he bottom and working your way up. If yuo don’t like that you just ahndle the challenge. As for mods. Well Iloaded the FLMM and turned on two of the moda. Now I can’t get to turn off. I even tried uninstlling the game and reinstaling. Guess what. They are still there. I can’t even play single player any more because the Npc therusters outrun my cruis engines. “What Genius Idea”
any my game disk is ruined and I have no idea where I’m going to get a replacement. ore than ten years of enjoyment are now gone! Possibly forever. Maybe the modders should focus on creating new stortylines and adventures. Instead fo weapons and ships. Or is that too hard for them to do. what they lack is imagination! That can’t be compensated for with new ships and weapons. All the original game really lacked was the human element to begin with. Of course it won’t matter to me now since my freelancer experience is pretty much over now. -
Hey - I told you how to remove Freelancer on the other topic where you started blasting modders without cause.
There are currently (this very minute!) 622 players playing FL, most of them on mods.
You are so far the only one who has not been able to remove a mod - but then you’re not listening to our help.
As I told you there, you are in the Lions’ den. But you are among friends - for now!
Your FL CD is certainly not ruined by any mod. It is NOT possible to overwrite a CD. If it read and installed once it will read and install again.
So - Have a cup of coffee or tea or Bovril or Horlicks, Coke, Peanut Juice, whatever calms you down, then go and follow my instructions and then report back in the other topic, this one is for a different subject.
Here’s the link to get you there…

Yes, read to the information on here please and stop making totally irrational and hysterical claims.
1. Your cd as already mentioned will not be damaged by mods
2. Imagination is the key to all mods and there are plenty of people on here with plenty of that. (Was going to say full of it but that would have been misunderstood for sure rofl). Like you correctly say, it’s not all about adding in ships, there is so much more that has been added to many mods by some very talented modders making them very interesting to play.
But all this discussion is pointless as in your universe the earth is square and will stay so. FL looks a lot better now than it did before due to the various addons made by the community here, but again i guess you won’t be seeing these wonderful effects. Not running the game still in 800x600 are you?

I know its been done before but freelancers almost at a point were the people left are mostly modders and still some of the best about.
I would like too see a pooled effort mod to truly sum up all other mods into one.
The way i see it, with the massive jumps made in last couple of years in understanding an minipulation of freelancer no mod ive seen truly pushes it too what could be done with some imagination and some of your guys tallent.
Flak88 seemed wild and out there way back when
but as it was developed it produces so many changes that by the end is it taking real advantage of the break throughs made.(free plug) Fox just usin Flak as example cos its such a unique mod
puttin some of u coders w0dk4 / motah / adoxa to work on a single goal with some of unique ideas could push hook to being the new unthinkably good.
the engine can take alot more than ive seen it do so far.
Now im an ideas man, i can do a bit of everything
just not as indepth in individual skills as many of you can.when it comes to different modders with diff styles i think under the right banner it can be easily compensated for due to the fact that what makes a truly great mod is the ability to be varied, to have more than one style, to be everything to everyone not just one mans play thing.
i know this is something that will prob never come to light along with attempts to make freelancer 2 ect but i know id drop rebalance to work on a team with you guys if we were to get all the minds here and pool them into one force.
need to convince the greats to join !

I went to bed at 8:00am and got up at 8:45… and im to tired to read every comment so if this has been said i apologise…and if this makes no sense… pssshtt. i care not.
Could we maybe put in some sort of competion for each month, 2 months… with some kind of prize, im not sure what, maybe an upgrade for ship for any kind of arranged large scale battle that might take place…
Ya. that makes less sense the more i read it…
StarTrader is a bigmadmklaeef zzzzzzzzz <-- sleeping…
Joking ST.

have to disagree with tanjitsu. the guys we know of are mostly modders but due to my playing experience on venoms dawn of war and on the dedicated 88flak server and new universe (though i started playing pretty late and stopped soon) there are lots of simple players out there, huge amounts of germans and russians, some frenchs and few canadians. most americans and pretty many germans are modders but out there are still many players who have pretty much no idea of modding. many do not even know of mods or how to get started with them which is, why freelancer is dying out slowly but definately. however at least my enthusiasm gives me strong belief that it is our duty and ability to change it massively.

Can’t agree on vanilla, can’t agree on mods…
Community servers have been tried in the past, and never really succeed. I think that’s because the idea of the server isn’t decided before it is put up.
Is it to advertise other mods? Or their features?
Is it to provide a place to play with each other without requiring a huge download?
Is it just to have fun/community spirit? You could consider a mod rotation of mods that have no server? Some older mods perhaps…that way it isn’t in competition with anyone (although stability may be an issue).
Alternatively, you can try getting folks to contribute, but what happens when someone needs to make a change quickly? A whole re-issue? If you include features of all these mods, you’d need them to work hard together - is that possible? Do you really want to deal with all those egos?
Or just go vanilla with some server side changes. Harder PC’s and the occasional invasion or increased police presence / patrols / piracy along the more popular trade routes (ie as people increase trade along one route, you can (server side) increase the piracy frequency by NPC’s on that route… and their ferocity/difficulty, which may make the route decrease as they find alternatives, or it may increase cooperation between players etc).
Just my thoughts Either way, administering the server will take time.
