Freelancer Source Code

All of that’s been known for years. The old points remain that it is doubtful FL’s source will ever be released due to possible infringment of open source code and no official word on abandoning the franchise.
Oh and, do you seriously think Microsoft isn’t aware of the petitions? They most likely monitored those and they also most likely watched TLR for a long time. They may even still be watching Starport.
I know a lot of folks have lost faith that MS will release the code but, we have to exhaust all efforts. All I’m asking is we put together a formal letter that we can post on MSR’s Facebook and Twitter sites. These folks have released the code for a game once before, who says they wont do it again?
Who knows, maybe these folks are not in the “decision making” loop but they could point us in the right direction. –- arg I’m loosing my train of thought …

Eh, if someone doesn’t want to write up a formal letter by the end of the week, I’ll do it. It never hurts to try.

I mean, and this also goes out to all the Mods and Devs I come to know and work with, with all the work you have professionally, as a Dev leader and (I bet) a limited “me” time, you can still find room to do these sort of things.
I’d do it myself but, I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to express myself and catch the “true nature” of what we’re asking for. It’s why I asked if someone could do this for us all.
If no one jumps in ahead of you, I’m really looking forward to reading “The Letter” and your unique ease of finding the right words that I’ve come to love.

A friendly advice from me, it won’t hurt to show them some great examples of what the modding community already has done. You should note Flak’s superior AI, mobile respawning, dx8->dx9 converting by W0dk4 and so on.

don’t forget the spliced ships and surs.
at this point a question comes up: what are we actually after? we need to get clearance about what it is that we really need. do we want our names in the branch or do we want to create a better freelancer? both of these aims would kill our chances. do we want to dig around in the source and open new possiblities? do we want to create a mod as successful as counterstrike and sell it giving a percent back to microsoft? what are we after, gentlemen? we still have the problem that many of us are after honor to be the best modder around while the game is just too old to aim for that rank.
our aims should become keeping freelancer alive and nothing more than this. making it beautiful and action. making it worthy to play regardless of its age. but we still are and probably will always be not aiming for the existance of freelancer yet for our own egos and our own creations.
i tell you what is going to happen once we have their tools and their source: we will make our mods insanely, their amount will rise in a way noone would have ever expected because we have all resources to do so. we will not have the problem of ignorance, we will just do and care about concurrence, not about balance, sense and idea. and once the three best mods are completed, which will happen fast, we will be proud of ourselves and let the modding of FL be, once and for all. this will finally be the end of this amazing game.I dunno if it really is going to be this way, but is the source worthy of giving it a try and risk it? Me personally am very, very much afraid of the day our edges will be gone. Call me paranoic, it’s ok. I don’t want us to be informed about the secrets of this game’s creation. We found out enough and we will find out the rest ourselves and as long as there is something we do not know, as long as there is something we can aim for, the game will live.
Just giving you something, my dear friends, to think about. Imagine. -
The chances of anything coming from Mars, are a million to one, they said…
… they watched from far away, and slowly, but surely, they drew their plans against us…
How about… Let’s just keep quiet and keep what we have, eh lads?

Honestly you may have a better chance at gaining release rights of creating a Clone of an initial game concept and run it as a first edition. Not sure if I am remembered anymore but I and Peacekeeper created Universal Modding that seems like ages ago. We went down every avenue we knew of to gain the coveted source code from Microsoft and was shut down at every turn. I am lead to believe one of 2 things;
1. Microsoft may be holding onto the source code to do a 2nd edition at a time of their choosing.
or
2. Digital Anvil (the original creators that Microsoft bought out) still retained a certain level of control dis allowing Microsoft to go any further thus shutting down all avenues of possibility.
You have a good thing going here. My best suggestion to all of you is to keep on keeping on and dropping the idea of the elusive source code altogether. Hard pill to swallow I know but it saves from wasting time beating the same horse. If I did not believe in what you were doing here I would have never allowed anything to be taken from Universal Modding data files to be used here.
On another note:
Hello once again to all my friends. Life has been busy for me dealing with other projects but as we know that is how life goes. To FriendlyFire, Cheeseontoast, RooAvery, LancerSolarus and many others here I just took a look and I say good show. Keep up the good work!

You know that they already know that we’ve already by-passed their Global Server and I’m sure that M$ knows everything anyone’s doing when it comes to Freelancer.
All they have to do is Google it at anytime or, use their own resources. You can bet they monitor everything they have owned or ever created. No doubt in my mind.
-
we use their codes, we use their idea and we recreate what they worked with.
honestly, were breaking their rights any time we do something. and if we are not, than they have the men to convince any judge, that we are.
but there is one thing we overlook time after time: noone - repeating - noone is yet after us. this can mean to things
either
they don’t care about it
or
they like what we do here and that their game is kept alive so successfully such a long time.is there anything in one of these cases we could be unhappy with?

This might enlighten…

Just like my signature is actually M$ but, I use it anyway for personal use and I’ve yet to get any flack about it. Even being registered on a Microsoft forum, I’ve used it.

anyone tried to contact the FL developers?
After all that’s how free space 2 source was released from what i remember
Info about the devs in Freelancer Fan Site Kit
O and M$ does not care about there old games the Demo and The fansite kit that are deleted form there server explains it all and the same goes for starlancer and Allegiance source and other stuff plus the MP server removal plus starlancer site has only the intro
http://www.microsoft.com/games/da/starlancer/ after that page not found -
oh yes, there were tryings to ask for the source. many, many, many times, 2009 even once again. no result. regardless what it is why they keep it, whether a new game or selling or whatever, they just make use of their rights and we have no chance to get to the source this way. hard but fact.
-
for one thing we are keeping this game alive. slso for every new player we recruit another copy of freelancer is sold. plus they hasve to be happy with all the new developments people are doing with this game. there is no harm in leting people let theyre creative juices fly and create bigger and better effects. it be a crime not to let people mod the game and develop it to keep it alive. this is problably the most easiest game to play and to get into thats what kept me here so long. also this game requires so little resources and does not tax your computer as alot of the newer do.

It’s got nothing to do with money, microsoft game studios policy is to never release source code, nothing is going to change that.
-
them not wanting to sell rights to use the source is not exactly true.
i approached them a few years ago about licensing the source for freelancer in order to create a sequel. I had the financial backing and everything else in place. they were quite eager to sign a deal, i even talked with MS Game Studios about it and they were eager.
the problem is they could not find it. In other words, they (at the time, basically lost the source code for the game).
it took nearly 8 months of back and forth with them to finally give up the ghost on looking for it.
