Sur Exporter without 18 limit?

Is there any way to “hack” the sur exporter to remove the 18 surgroups limit?

No, I mean the sur exporter.
The problem is: SurSplice can’t apply more than 1 sur mesh to 1 group! I need more than 1 mesh at 1 group!
Sur Splice just uses the one of the given meshes, but not all.It’s needed to create bigger ships with bigger and detailed parts which can be shot.
Oh and by the way: can someone tell my why sursplice doesn’t create a physical collision on the non-root sur meshes if the player flies the ship (NPCs and objects works fine!)?

Both Sur exporters can handle 18 groups only.
If you make multi-part groups the sur will not work in parts, or may crash FL.
Yep - bad sur. It can take several attempts to make a good one with the tools we have.
You could try sur builder, it can make good surs quickly (not always good shapes though) but be aware it does not generate all sur parts for every model.
Big surs take longer collision compute time and you will get jerky graphics while it is happening. They are supposed to be simple.
It will take a very long time to make such a big sur, is it really necessary for your model? Even my Kilrathi Dreadnought with all its booms covered and 2 working docks is still 18 or less.
Take a long look at your models and see if you can’t do it in 18 or less.

Is there any possibility to edit .surs “per hand” with the text format of FL Model Tool or SurDump?

Well, I plan on removing that limit for my update. I may also have to tweak sur_splice to match it. Maybe I’ll put the JFLP update back on hold and get back to the exporter… I had hoped to get the cmp importer/exporter source (so everything works well together), but after an initial response, haven’t heard back again (the importer was on a defunct hard drive, so that might not be likely; Colin said he’d make them available).

The sursplice method is the best of all. There is just the problem, that you can’t create more than 1 sur mesh per cmp group via SurSplice and physical collisions of the sur meshes wont work on ships the player flies (NPCs and objects accept collision).
