What the heck is holoviral counterfeiting technology…?
-
Taking advantage of the multi-layered high density optical discs used in Sirius today, Holoviral counterfeiting is a way of disguising counterfeit software as legitimate in order to get past checkpoints.
The process involves taking the original source media and interlacing it with the fake, legitimate, data to be checked. When a standard laser scanning beam is applied, it only reads the “legitimate” interlaced data, thus duping many authorities.
The end user has a modified scanning laser that can read only the pirated section of the media, however each disc has a unique calibration required for a successful read in order to prevent police from easily checking for counterfeits with a known key.

good lord… you came up with that in all of about 3 minutes?
I just may use that. With your permission of course… -
if ya do let me know and smack me in the credits

It’s a technology and method used to create new products from readily-found materials such as ground glass, granite, marble, and sand, using holographic nanotechnology.
However criminals use it to make counterfeit copies of valuable or rare items such as rare gems, ultra-low-loss optical data transmission conduits, and some high-temperature hyperdrive components!
The counterfeiters are inscrutable, unscrupulous, and extremely capable. The counterfeit items are indistiguishable from the original item, and as they do not have the durability or qualities of the original item, they fail, and in the case of hyperdrive components the results are usually catastrophic and fatal!

First thought is that holograms are utilised as a means of communication - whereby you beam a hologram (thinking starwars-esque) of yourself talking rather than a video image.
So since there would be certain security features, such as identities, to identify the sender of such messages to the receiver - counterfeiting would involve making a clone of the original sending unit, allowing pirates to send communication as if they come from a source.
i.e. they would be able to send communication as if they are the source, or intercept communication as if they are the recipient.
So a means of stealing data sent via holograms, or pretending to be a certain sender.

Well, in Voyager isn’t there a holographic medicine man who performs operations?
So my nanobots can be projected holographically from another galaxy, to generate new products from waste materials!
Now - guess who the counterfeiters are? Today they would be the Koreans and Chinese, with the fake car parts!
So - I just extrapolated!

Counterfeit money is currency that is produced without the legal sanction of the state or government; counterfeit government bonds are public debt instruments produced without legal sanction with the intention of “cashing them in” for authentic currency, or using them as collateral to secure legitimate loans or lines of credit.
Counterfeiting is universally regarded as a criminal act and has been known to be attempted in very large amounts. The new concept of Holoviral Counterfeiting is undetectable by 17 of the 19 major banks in Sirius and this equipment is therefore illegal.

so many ideas…
I’m actually liking Chips’ suggestion best as it goes along with the general assumptions I was making about the technology. I’m just having trouble putting holographic and viral together. Viral sounds like it spreads once seeded.
So, what holographic technology would spread like a virus, but would be official enough and valuable enough for someone to want to counterfeit it?
Perhaps something like holographic communications data-mining for the purpose of not only illegally obtaining someone’s information for the purpose of misrepresentation, but also the information of anyone that person communicates with via the holo-net.
On another note, does anyone know of a tool that can be used to look at the icons in the nn_icons folder?

nn_icons are just normal 3dbs, so a MilkShape importer, UTF Editor (flipping tga textures in the model will be done someday), or anything that extracts the tga.

A mind-control holovirus!!
The Chinese tried to copy it and it mutated into the illegal counterfeit type!!!
NexOse - your people have a lot to answer!
rofl!
